This man is Steve Perlman, a Silicon valley investor known for WebTV which he sold to Microsoft for half a billion dollars and also the man behind Quick Time, the software that brought Video to the Macintosh. He has a rather intereting claim to put forward. He says he can make your cell data faster by 1000 fold. Seems rather bold.

The principle that he establishes is “Since the invention of wireless, people have moved around the coverage area. Now, the coverage area follows you.”

Today’s technology uses multiple antennas to improve the coverage of a signal, instead here we focus a focus a single signal to a particular individual’s phone. The antennas we currently use work alongside other antennas but not in tandem with each other. What this does is it actually interferes with other signals if they are placed too close to each other. Working hand-in-hand with principal scientist Antonio Forenza and other Rearden engineers, Perlman has developed a new type of antenna. This antenna claims to use the Principle of interference to it’s advantage. Interference can be one of 2 types- constructive ( strengthens a signal ) or destructive ( cancels out the signals). pCell uses constructive interference wherein when 2 signals r brought close to each other they just end up making a signal much stronger. He stated  “You can locate the radio heads wherever you want them, rather than where it’s convenient to put them, and they all transmit in such a way that there’s huge overlap…creating an extremely high-performance signal”. So essentially Perlman says “Around the mobile phone, the waves add to each other, and everywhere else, the waves cancel each other out.”

Having this will improve the reception of mobile carriers in basements/ underground areas. :)
