If you're talking about the desktop widget, no. However, Core Monitor itself will work fine.

Yes you should be able to run that program on windows 8/windows 8.1 (desktop) i use a similar program called speedfan on windows 8.1.you can run windows 7 programs on 8 just fine

I'm not sure about Realtemp, but in my experience CoreTemp isn't very good at measuring temps on any AMD socket later than AM2+. You can try it, but if it appears too low, it's probably wrong.

I tend to use HWiNFO for monitoring CPUs, as it gives a lot more information and works well with new AMD CPUs, although I'm not sure if it works on Windows 8.

Windows 8 dropped support for widgets, as they were a big security risk. (according to Microsoft.)

Most people now use a variation of Rainmeter, combined with the awfulness that is Speedfan.

Speedfan is the second best software to control fans, only asus fan xpert is better.

I'm currently using CoreTemp in Windows 8.1 Pro pretty much 24/7 when my PC is on.

 

Having Logitech G19 posting CPU info all the time is pretty cool.
