Hey guys!

So i want to update my Rig, step by step, to reach full gaming potential at some point in the future.

Here is my current setup:

Monitor: Omen 27 by HP

GPU: ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 8GB

CPU: Intel Core i7 - 4790 @ 3,60GHz

Motherboard: ASUS Z87 PRO (V-Edition)

RAM: HyperX HX318C10FBK2 1866MHz, CL10, DIMM (2x8GB)

Power Supply: bequiet! 500W

The goal is to upgrade everything step by step to reach a setup that revolves around a GeForce RTX (2070 Super or even 2080) as a center piece.

The problem is that my CPU seems to start making problems and dragging my system down hard. Thats why i have to start upgrading now.

The budged, for now, is roughly 800€. But there will be more available throughout the year. Thats why i need to build upon a foundation.

So how and where do i start?

I hope you guys find the time to help me out here :)

Best regards!

Could you tell in a bit more detail kind of problems you are experiencing with your current setup? And also what you consider "full gaming potential". Such as how many FPS you would like to run?

I ask because I would say much depends on the way you want to play games. For example, I have an old i7 3770K for my VR-gaming rig which works quite fine at 60-90 fps, but 144Hz refresh rates (especially in VR) would probably be hard to drive.

Shure thing!

Iam not interessted in VR (tried it, cant bear it)

I wanna be able to play games on full settings and 1440p (potentiall 4k in the future).

Concerning my CPU:

Iam not 100% shure that my CPU is the problem but the following issues make me belive it is:

1. he is the oldest and weakest part of my rig.

2 .he tends to overheat from time to time (startup error concerning overheat, 75° - 90° while not under pressure, but only from time to time).

3. he tends to refuse overclocking (overclocking error in bios from time to time. tried updating, changing settings etc. but didnt help).

4. all those things occured after a while now and where not present a year or so ago. Iam constantly updating / reinstalling my OS so its def. no software issue. Since i dont want to wait until it dies on me i figure that i can start now.

Just in case i wasnt clear in my og post:

My goal is to upgrade step by step to a powerful gaming rig. Meaning i cant just build it from scratch in one go neither can i just wait and save. That makes it a bit hard for me to find the right hardware.

I would suggest to, first of all, check whether it is not a cooling issue instead of a CPU issue. In the worst case this will set you back tens of Euros, instead of hundreds. In the best case, your setup is still good enough for some decent gaming and you will get to save a bit longer for a better upgrade down the road. Personally I would do the following:

  • Use a can of compressed air to remove any built-up dust from your CPU fan and from the fins of your CPU heat sink.
  • Remove your CPU heat sink and apply new thermal compound.
  • Make sure your case fans are working properly, and there is enough airflow through your case. Replace and/or upgrade fans if appropriate.

If all that fails to resolve the temperature issues, then my suggestion for an upgrade would be:

  • ~€300: Ryzen 3700X. (You can of course wait for a Ryzen 4000 series, but my take on this is that there is always something new around the corner. Don't wait on it unless you know it will be available within a month or so. I believe there are currently only rumors about the next gen arriving in October of this year.)
  • ~€150 - €200: Motherboard with X570 chipset. This is the more expensive variant, but given that you said you have overclocked in the past.
  • ~€125: 16GB dual channel DDR4 kit. I believe the kits all work pretty well with Ryzen (many are validated by AMD). This price will get you 2x 8GB of 3600MHz CL16 Trident Z Neo modules for example.

Your GPU and PSU are still fine I would say. The above will stay well within your budget. The remainder can be spent on a case (if needed), or upgrades to your personal liking such as more memory, or a better processor.

Hope this helps you a bit!

Well I would wait for the upcoming MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk (200€) since it's performance is good and even better than most top tier X570 mobos that cost way more. I suggest you watch this video MSI X570 Tomahawk, the best X570 Board?

Well the Ryzen 3700X costs less than 3900X. You can go with that option.

And as for RAM, I would for any non RGB since they cost less as long as the RAM is 3200 or 3600MHz CL16.

The tomahawk looks really good.

Question is when will it be available in retail since its not even listed yet.

After looking up some comparisons i will probably go with the Ryzen 7 3700x since there is not much performance drop compared to the 3900x

I think it's gonna be available in June, so it's not too long until it hits the shelves.

this would do:

but honestly i would wait 6 months for new ryzen 4000. But that motherboard will support ryzen 4000 so you could go with that setup.
