What would be the best budget z370 motherboard?

DO not get 8th gen intel now. ryzen is no-brainer right now.

something like this would work:

@SavageNeo does have a point.

If you NEED to get a new motherboard for a NEW CPU, might as well put Ryzen 3600 (or higher) in your consideration -- just as a side-by-side comparison even.

I would not get a i5-8400 either.

It's a 2.8 GHz base clock, and boosts UP TO 4.0 GHz.

2.8 GHz all-core base frequency is on the low side.

You should consider a i5-8600(K / non-K) or i5-9600(K / KF / non-K) instead.

From what I can see, the P-states / boost tables are as follows for the i5-9600.

Keep in mind, these are UP TO numbers...

  • 1 Core active (remaining 5 cores idle) -- up to 4.6 GHz
  • 2 Cores active -- up to 4.5 GHz
  • 3 Cores active -- up to 4.5 GHz
  • 4 Cores active -- up to 4.4 GHz
  • 5 Cores active -- up to 4.4 GHz
  • 6 Cores all active -- up to 4.3 GHz

i5-9600K / 9600KF has a base frequency of 3.7 GHz, and boosts up to 4.6 GHz as well.

I mostly just wanna play borderlands 3 at 1080p and doom enternal. Does the graphics card have to be AMD or will a Nvidia one work?

Graphics card does not matter, either AMD or nVidia will work fine.

Doom Eternal (also Doom 2016) is more optimized with AMD GPUs, though.
