Morning all,

I trust you are all well in this troubling times.

I'm currently running a Synology NAS which has 2 drives to it but I'm looking to upgrade as I'm finding that I'm allocating space a lot quicker than I'd have hoped. Whilst I love Synology's ecosystem I do wonder if it would be easier and better in the long run to create my own server using some old parts and some parts from Ebay or the like. The issue that I'm forsee is that I do a lot of music production and DJ'ing meaning i have to hold a lot of heavy audio files which is stressing my current NAS out.

I'm wondering what kind of specs I'd realistically need to run a file server which would serve music files to my main PC and then video files to the rest of the house? I'm looking to run 4x 4GB drives with 1x 60GB ssd for the OS, what kind of raid would be best in this setup and finally can anyone recommend any software that would be best to facilitate my project?

I realise this is less of a 'this is what I have created' and more of an advice post but your replies will be appreciated!

Thanks again!
