If its NVME you will generally get more consistent performance with a heatsink, otherwise case airflow should do the trick.

what about long hours gaming ?

They only heat up under heavy load, gaming wont be.  They also cool down really quickly.

You'll be fine.

If somehow you get a drive up to it's inoperable temperature, it will throttle

yes its a nvme, I gunna get the Sabrent Rocket

If your motherboard doesn't come with a heatsink on the M.2 slot then get the version of the SSD with a heatsink on it, then never worry about it again.

But honestly gaming is not going to stress it, only really large file transfers are likely to cause throttling.

Or just don't worry about something that only serves a cosmetic purpose.

Do you need one for gaming?  No.

But they are definitely NOT merely cosmetic, if you are pushing their top speed and its a good SSD (SLC or MLC) then they DO thermal throttle.  Its just not something you are ever going to experience gaming.

Considering the price with and without is usually minimal or even none-existent, it doesn't hurt to have one.  Obviously you need to know if your motherboard already comes with one or else you wont be able to fit an SSD that has one pre-applied.

With the exception of some fringe usecases, like people who buy high end SSD's for scratch disks or servers, no. A lot of the time, heatsinks aren't even actually functional. They're like the metal backplates on GPU's, that actually just make things hotter.

No SSD's are SLC anymore, and there are almost no 2-bit MLC ones. And yes, many heat spreaders are cosmetic. They're on their because they don't cost much and looking cool makes stuff sell more. Why do you think DRAM has those worthless heatspreaders?

But again, it doesn't hurt.  With electronics cooler is almost always better for life span.  Although NAND does retain data better if written to hot.
