Previously, I was making a new PC for my father.

I was given a lot of good options and ideas for it. I only have built one PC before this, so I took a step back and just remade a new version using Intel instead of Ryzen.

Back story, I want to build him a computer that will last a while to come. He needs to be able to move over large video and photo files to new hard drives. Also, be able to open up those video, files, pictures fast, without skipping a beat.

I know he has other hard drives that I will have to move their memory over as well. With the two SSD's, The 500GB I want to put the OS on, and the 1TB for where he can put files, which in the future can be moved over to an external backup. Any ideas? Thoughts? Criticism is always allowed.

  • Go with a Ryzen processor, IIRC even with inflated pricing the 1600AF is quite cheap. It also includes a cooler, thus saving you another $40.
  • You can buy a 2TB NVME drive for the same price, which would make more sense.
  • If it's just moving files, just get a 570 for $75 less. Or, if he really isn't going to do anything graphically intensive, drop down to something like a GT1030/GTX 1050.
  • That's an awful lot for a card reader.

The only issue with intel over AMD atm is you pay more for what you get. Generally somewhere between $20-$100 for the setup.  The memory costs less, but the cpu is a lot more expensive for equivalent performance.  Equivalent performance is doable in the desktop space though.  Building intel won’t buy you much familiarity wise though.  New systems are new systems

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I like the changes, since from what other ideas from going AMD. The only issue with the GPU here is I wanted the option of the two HDMI's and two DPI's. Since my dad might have two monitors, and run HDMI cables to other TV's.

1600af is starting to lose value at $150.  Those things used to be under a Benjamin.

Ok I think maybe a 5600xt would be good for you just use one dp to hdmi converter
