I purchased a used i7 4790 to upgrade the i3 4170 in my ASRock H97 MITX motherboard. With the i7 installed, my system will not post, but the lights/fans will come on. I have updated the BIOS to the latest revision, and cleared the CMOS. I assume that if the 4790 was bad, the system wouldn't even power on.

Am I missing something, or do I need to return the CPU?

Depends on what part is bad.  Are you using the iGPU?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
