Need some advice on some tech :)

So I want to build a small finger print scanner to fit into the door of my outside shed. 

 

Hopefully have it protected by the weather  but where would I start such a project?

Are you asking for a fingerprint scanner of some sort? What is it unlocking? There are locks with built-in FP scanners.

Most hardware stores will sell off the shelf locks that have built in fingerprint sensors. Pretty much the same as installing a regular lock. If your shed is already using a bolt or hinge latch that is secured with a padlock then you can just buy an electronic padlock with a fingerprint sensor and use that instead of a regular padlock.
Keep in mind that most finger print locks are laughably insecure, so don't use a fingerprint lock if there's anything in the shed you don't want to lose (expensive tools, motorbike, etc).
