Hi all

Hope your all safe and having a better quarantine than me.

Killing some time right now trying to fine tune camera wish lists, currently I have a canon 1300d, a cheap tripod that is good enough for when I need it and its light enough to travel, only holds up 3kg but it's going to be a long time before I replace the body or can afford the 600mm lens and that's only around 1kg so even then it should be ok, and a few lenses for pretty much everything I want, no macro lens yet but one day. One thing I do want to look into is a shutter release remote so I can play with starlight shots when I can go back outside again.

any recommendations? or should I just use the app?

Thanks all!

the app will likely work fine.

Canon RS-60E3 is canon's basic one you don't seem to be after one to make time lapses so you don't need an interval timer.

I've been looking at this, only thing I don't like is the fact its wired, would make light painting foreground subjects a pain, specially if I ended up needing the extension for it too.

But you are very right I'm not looking for all the extra settings as I would imagine they will be set when I first set the camera up before I start doing the important long exposure stuff, however not really tried this type of photography out yet so no idea if that will be how it works out.

my other idea this get that, complete overkill for what I plan to use it for but I guess I could then learn to use it properly and not spend more on buying more than one?

app is kinda crap, delay is roughly 2-3 seconds horrible for shooting things like fireworks or even most landscapes especially if there is a moving subject in it. light painting with it would be near impossible to time yourself.

I think I'm actually using that model of remote shutter. It works with a roughly 90% consistency. Honestly a pretty good value for more time sensitive things I still use a cheap wired one I got aliexpress. But do note, the one you linked comes with the N3 connector, used by larger cameras like the 5DM4 or 6DM2. What you need for the 1300d is one with an E3 connector.

ahem I ever used one and it is not 1kg. below are the weight of canon's 4 600mm f/4 lenses.

word of advice, do NOT cheap out on the tripod. I learned it the hard way, back when I still used crop sensor cameras like the 750D or 80D, I thought I could get away with cheap tripods. nope, I ended up spending more on a good Manfrotto Carbon Fiber 055 series tripod with an X-Pro ballhead which costed more than the cameras did. I used it for quite awhile even went I moved to Full Frame bodies with large lenses (Look at my Signature below) I used to have even larger lenses but sold most of them after I realised I really didn't use them enough anymore (I used to shoot birds). That tripod lasted me a long time even though it costed about 500USD total, it paid for itself many times over. I only recently switched to Leofoto Ranger series Carbon Fiber Tripods after I tried one out that my friend loaned to me. Realised even though they are still not cheap, they are light yet VERY sturdy.

If I'm honest, if a tripod with head costs less than 200USD its really not worth your money. If you don't have a stable tripod, a gust of wind or a light bump may ruin your many hour timelapse or once in a lifetime long exposure shot.

had only played with the app with the camera sat next to me on my desk, but good to know its not the best.

Thank you for the catch on the wireless remote, I have updated the amazon wish list.

Also I was wrong on the weight, looking at the sigma 150-600 contemporary which is 1.9kg at least according to the spec sheets, although I do worry about is whether its stupid to put a £800 on a entry level body but hey that's a topic all it's own.

I want a nice tripod, but for now I have much bigger things I need to save money for, providing the lockdowns end in time. I also like the fact that mine is so light as it means it can go travelling with me, one day I will replace it, because it does unnerve me that I am balancing hundreds in camera gear on a £20 piece of plastic from curry's but it does the job the few times I do need to use it, that being said because I have always needed to use the button on the camera I'm pretty much holding it so I guess I will have to be super careful if I'm using the remote shutter.

great lens, used to own one. its a great starter lens for birding, sports or plane spotting (i know a hell lot of plane spotters who use it)

actually i'd suggest look at the used market. look for an older generation manfrotto 190 carbon fiber tripod, its very light, relatively stable, and goes for quite cheap ill bet maybe around 70-80 pounds. (picked up a couple for my friends for around 100-150SGD range, converts to about 50-80 GBP) Rather pick up a decent old one which you can use for ages or at least it'll still hold value after awhile. The cheap one may last you a short while before you get sick of it and want a new one or it breaks etc.

Random question for you, have you used this as a time lapse intervalometer at all? I know this has some form of interval timer in it but from what I can see it can only take up to 99 images?

If you wanted to go DIY, this scanner uses an Arduino and an IR LED to trigger the shutter. I'm sure you could make that wireless.

this could be fun, although probably a little above my skills lol, not sure how well it would work for travelling either, can't imagine TSA would approve of some homemade thing with a timer on it XD

if im not wrong it can go even longer. i once took a timelapse about 2k photos at one go using the intervalometer (it was horrible to process)
