You won't be needing an x470 or 570 board, a B450 tomahawk is the most you'll need for a 3600 unless for some reason you really need PCIe 4

Do the b450 boards support sli?

No, but assuming you're upgrading your gpu setup you won't need it

upgrade my gpu? If so what you would actually be an upgrade?

This. I upgraded from 2x GTX 980s to a single GTX 1080 and even though the 2x GTX 980s are outright faster (10% with modern drivers and 30% with old drivers based on my Firestrike testing) the additional VRAM and general architecture improvements are much appreciated.

I think a GTX 1080 Ti is around 30% or so faster than a GTX 1080 so that card would be the "direct" replacement I think. A GTX 1080 Ti does have less CUDA cores but the improvements in the Pascal architecture pretty much cancel the difference out. Not to mention the ease of only having to deal with the power and heat of a single card vs two.

Ouch don't think I can afford a 1080 ti at the moment. However, with sli not being what it once was. Would a 5700 xt be comparable in performance. I think my sli was bottlenecked by my fx8320 anyway.

5700 XT looks like it's comparable. It's certainly faster than a GTX 1080 and slightly slower than a GTX 1080 Ti (although it depends on what you play; it is faster in some titles). 5700XT is neck and neck with the RTX 2070 by the looks of it.

Any of those GPUs would be a solid choice I think.
