Hi,

I wasn't sure where to post this as it is my first post on the forum, but wanted some help if anybody has a few minutes to give me some advice.

I'm new to PC gaming, I currently have an Xbox One and have been a console gamer my whole life. My job requires me to edit video and use Adobe products, and since I'm working from home I decided to invest in a new PC. While I was at it, I thought it may also be a good time to build a proper gaming machine, and abandon console gaming altogether.

I'm happy to spend between $2400-2800 AUD, but need help picking a graphics card and CPU. There's so much information out there, as someone who doesn't understand all the specs/lingo, it's difficult to digest and make a decision. I've heard that the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is a good CPU, but was unsure if it's compatible with all GPUs etc.

Also, if anyone can advise me on where the bulk of my money should be going when building a PC (i.e. 30% of budget towards GPU, 10% towards case etc.)

If you guys could recommend a GPU, CPU, and a compatible motherboard it would be really helpful.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, sorry for sounding so dumb I just need some help in making a decision. Hope you are all staying safe and healthy during this time.

I am not experienced wil GPUs, but I can help you with CPU. Since you'll be doing video editing, more cores and threads will help you. The ryzen 9 3950x (Top of the line Ryzen chip) will be a great choice seeing your budget. I know adobe performs a little bit better at gaming, but the sheer number of cores on R9 will boost your productivity.

Currently, AMD provides best bang for buck!

Thank you for responding, I appreciate it. Do you think Ryzen will still perform well in gaming if it's complimented with a good graphics card (enough to run games at 60 fps 1440p)? Also, is my budget enough to create a PC that can run games at 1440/60fps as well as render/edit videos?

If paired with a GPU like an rtx 2070 super/ 2080 super, it will be a beast of a PC. Will run no problem. And your budget is enough for the things mentioned.

take a look at this, since your primary focus is video editing i'd start here. this is a 1000 USD (or thereabouts) video editing machine (ignore the 4k) which gives you a few hundred dollars leeway to adjust as you see fit for your usecase

also yes ryzen performs just fine in games. it's a good architecture despite intel constantly shireking about them having 1-2fps more. for 60hz gaming at 1440p your GPU will be the limiting factor, cpu bottlenecks don't really come in until you go past the 100-120hz category, but even then an overclocked ryzen chip can handle it no problem

in that video they're using a 1650 GPU mainly for display output and encoding purposes but there's no reason you couldn't put something like a 5700XT/2070S/Vega64 in there instead. do check what your software uses though, whether it prefers CUDA (Nvidia) or OpenCL (AMD) for it's hardware acceleration, as that's going to be your main deciding factor in what GPU you should go for out of that pricing tier.

Hey mate, appreciate the detailed response this community has been awesome so far.

It prefers OpenCL, after going through the forum and also researching I'm confident that the machine will be able to handle video editing needs for sure - I'm currently leaning towards Ryzen but don't have a brand preference, I only care about performance value.

Which GPU would you recommend, once again I primarily care about 1440p gaming at 60 fps, and want to ensure that once new consoles drop it will be able to handle next-gen games at 1440p 60 fps.

Any advice would be awesome, appreciate the response my friend.
