Hi everyone,

I've built a rig almost 2 years back and I've been experiencing some strange lag spikes. It often happens when I am just on the desktop, browsing the internet and watching a video, but I have also found that it happens with games too.

What happens: Randomly while using the system the mouse lags and the computer stutters. Opening applications and moving windows are very laggy.

FPS on Games:

Counter-Strike: 80-100 FPS (1080p)

Apex Legends: 60-70 FPS (1080p)

PUBG: 50-70 FPS (1080p)

Modern Warfare : 70-75 FPS (1080p)

Configuration:

CPU: Ryzen 7 1700x cooled by Cooler Master ML240L AIO- Currently at stock speeds

Motherboard: Asus Crosshair VI Hero x370

RAM: 2 x 8GB TridentZ RGB DDR4 3200MHz

Boot Drive: Samsung 860 EVO SSD 250GB

PSU: Corsair RM650X

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Temperatures seem fine.

CPU - Idles at 40-51c

GPU - Idles at 50-55c

So far, I have tried (in order):

  1. Updating motherboard BIOS
  2. Reapplying thermal paste to GPU
  3. Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool - No errors
  4. Swapping RAM around to different slots
  5. Fresh OS Re-install - On the second install, greatly reduced the amount of ASUS software
  6. Switched to on-board graphics card - Lag still occurs
  7. (NEW) Tested each stick of RAM individually in each DIMM slot

I can't for the life of me figure out if it's hardware or software (hence above). I have no reliable way of triggering it since its completely random. Recently though it has been happening a lot.

Thanks in Advance!!

its at that state when it stutters? try to open the task manager and observe it when ti stutters. sometimes it just peaks at 100% for a few seconds then be back to normal. usually caused by some kind of background app or a virus.

I just checked. No spike in CPU or Memory usage.
