I've been using the folding at home and giving my points to linus tech tips so what are the points good for?

Just a way of tracking your contribution and bragging rights. If you have friends who also fold you can compete amongst yourselves to see who can get the most points. You can also see where you rank within the LTT team. The team points for LTT is just a way of competing against other teams. We're currently 4th in the world for total points, looking to move up in to 3rd place overtaking the EVGA folding team in about a month at our current rate if we can keep it up.

The extremeoverclocking folding website is good for tracking points and you can search your folding username to find yourself on there.

Points can be helpful to try to optimize your system. They can also show dedication to the project. other than that, not much

Second this, My system ran great for a long time until I started folding 24/7.  Whole new overclocks/AVX settings on CPU/GPU/memory to fold all day every day for a week/ multiple weeks.
