im buying a new pc to serve as a plex media server running windows in a month or two, should i go for the intel 10th generation i5 chip or just wait 6 or so months for the 11th gen chip as it seems to be a bigger upgrade than 9th to 10th will be.

Why not just get a ryzen chip? Cheaper and more threads which will allow for more streams.

The problem right now is intel is Very expensive pric/performance wise atm, and it’s not improving much.  Intel hasn’t made real significant strides gen by gen in over 10 years.  I’ve got a 10 year old intel cpu that is still effective.  It shouldn’t be.  Supposedly tiger lake is the earliest opportunity intel has to produce anything competitive with current AMD stuff.  It’s that bad.  11th gen is not tiger lake, so what you’re asking is “should I buy this weak and expensive cpu or hold out for this other weak and expensive cpu?”  The only answer I can give is “no”.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

why not a ryzen chip?

i was thinking of getting a ryzen 3600, but the igpu on the intel chip just makes it much more convenient for me as i would be building in a small case and where i live, the gpus can cost double the MRP

true, i have a 6600k in my gaming rig that still is perfectly fine for the games i play, but according to many leaks (this video:

) 11th gen is looking to be somewhat decent

Intel marketing is claiming it is anyway.  They’ve done that before though.  I’m not one to count chickens lately.

Nah.  2400g and 3400g are both 4/8 zen plus.  Well hmm... high end 9th gen i5 isn’t much better than a 2400g... more than 4 cores would be kinda nice for a plex server.... The 2400 &3400 actually have The same cpu in them.  The only difference is how powerful the apu is.  AMD is supposed to be coming out with some bigger than 4/8 apus but it hasn’t happened yet.  Chickens again.  There are some “4000” laptop apus starting to hit the market that actually have greater than 4 core zen2 apus in them.

Yep.  Even the lowest ball gpu card will rum rings around an apu/iGPU. and if rings aren’t needed one can go even cheaper.  If only basic 2d is needed finding an old half height low end gpu should cost sub $50 easily.

i dont mind even buying a 3600, but the problem is the gpus where i live are insanely overpriced

If you’re building a plex server you need almost no gpu though.  Find something old and used that isn’t capable of gaming.  The whole “can it game?” aspect often adds a gigantic premium to gpu prices.  If you deliberately get under that things might get cheap fast.  It’s a supply/demand issue.  Few people want GPUs that can’t game.

yea i know, but where i live there is no used market for pc components. the only options i have for a low end gpu are the gt 1030 and the gt 710, both of which are extremely overpriced for my use case (100 usd for the 1030 and around 70 for the 710)

How does a 3600+ a 710 compare to a 8600 price wise?  They’ve got the same core count.

the 3600+710 is roughly 10-20 usd above the 9600. if the 10600 launches at the same price point, would you still say the 3600+710 combo would be better than the 10600 with its igpu? the 10600 is rumoured to launch with hyperthreading support.
