Hi all,

I'm making an upgrade to my current PC to play the new game Mount & Blade II Bannerlord. I currently have big issues with Fps drops and screen tearing (Constantly dropping to 1-20fps) despite playing around with Vsync etc etc.

I have a YT Channel so ideally I need a set up that can run with Shadowplay.

My PC is...

ASUS Z170-P Motherboard

i7-6700k 4GHZ 4core 8 Threads.

2x4Gb's DDR4 2400 MhZ RAM

GTX - 970

Corsair VS 550W Powersupply

1TB HDD

In terms of Upgrades I think I want to go for

CPU - The same, this CPU is pretty decent and doesnt reach max usage when in games

RAM - Not sure weather to get one stick of 8GB or two 4GB's or what speed I should get (Should it be the same speed as my current ram)

Graphics Card - Looking at a 1660 Super card, can afford cards at that price point.

SSD - No idea what to get but looking for something as an extra to my HDD not a replacement. So something around the 200GB mark that's on the cheap end and of course, has a DRAM Cache.

Thank you, I'm a noob at this.

Its memory problem you are having. you dont have enough of it.

On the CPU, you are good for now.

its cheaper to just get 2x 8gb DDR4 memory at higher frequency and just replace that(and sell it?). memory is pretty cheap right now. i got my 16gb ddr4 3200mhz cl 16 at $60.

on the GPU department, as long as it satisfies your needs, keep it. even a 5500xt is an upgrade but not that much. if 5600xt is on your budget, id say go for it.

on SSD, id say get something like 256gb as that will literally improve boot times. id say its not that important but if you are anal about loading time, id say go for it. Open world games also benefit in an SSD so if you plan to play open world games, id say go get it....

now depending on your budget, id say , prioritize the memory instead.

Im with the mentaility of "IF IM NOT SURE IF ITS ENOUGH COOLING, GO OVERKILL"

IF you can stretch your budget to it you could think about getting 2 x 8gb 3000 or 3200 speed ram sticks, your mobo will allow you to use these higher speeds if you enable XMP in bios. I've got 3200mhz running well with an i5 9400f and it gives you a few more fps in games.

i would try to get a 2x4gb kit with similar specs as the current one, a 1660super and any 500gb ssd - try intel 660p or crucial p1 (whichever is cheaper)

I think I'll do the 2x4 then, get the dual channel memory aspect as well I suppose. Intel 660p looks great at only £67.

If you do that try and get ram sticks with the same timings as well as speed of the two you have.

Yeh the memory ins't great. Too see if performance improved with higher memory, I stuck my brothers 8gb stick in along with my two fours and it didn't yield any noticeable results aside from less stuttering. Fps difference was minimal hence why I want to improve graphics card. I will test this again and double check the difference just to make sure.

That's a good idea actually, I'll have a look at the prices etc and see if selling my current RAM then buying two eights works out to be cheaper. In terms of speed because of this video I'm put off by bothering to spend more for 3000 MHZ. Again I'll look at prices etc and figure out the best.

I don't think my current GPU does hold up to what I want, I'll look into the 5500 and 5600 XT's they look decent, I'll look at some benchmarks etc and see what is worth going for either the 1660 super or 5500 XT.

Yeh that's a good point I'm only looks to have my windows installed there as well as a couple of games so again i'll look at price points etc and see.

Thank you for your help

oh, just an additional warning if you plan to use an SSD, dont fill it up more than 90%. that will literally degrade and SSD a lot. so for example, you have 200gb, just fill it up to 180gb. a better option is to just allocate 10% of an ssd as unallocated so you cant accidentally use it.

Yeh, I didn't think of the timings so I'll remember that when shopping around

In terms of budget I would rather save money where I can so I think it will be cheaper to get 2x4Gb's however I will look into this.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey. I created an account just to say I have the exact same chip and was contemplating an upgrade too. However, from what I could find online it seemed like 2133mHz was the "intel approved" speed for this chip and it is unclear to me whether or not XMP would even be able to help take advantage of the 3200 that I could get my hands on.

That being said I personally recommend 2x8 with a decent speed. From what I've seen/read that is the sweetspot considering the RAM needed for just using chrome and a program or two..

I have a MSI B150M motherboard myself (built in a small case because I like making it hard on myself apparently..). I got a 2070S for my bonus this year and really was hoping that I could take a bottleneck out of the system by getting some decent RAM speed. I'm just afraid I've researched myself into option paralysis.
