Hey everyone with everything going on I have been looking at breathing in some fresh new air into the my rig for a reasonable amount of money.

The current part list is here, I have a i5 6600K@4.8Ghz, MSI Z170 motherboard, 16 gig of 2400Mhz and a Asus RX480 4GB GPU.

I do use my PC for OG HTC Vive gaming and playing the physic heavy car sim BeamNG.drive @2560x1080 75Hz

As I personally see it I see 3 upgrade,

  1. Max out my CPU potential with a i7 7700K from ebay ~450$ CAD
  2. Keep my CPU and upgrade to a RTX 2060 or 5600XT ~- 450$ CAD

If it was not for playing physics heavy games I would see the the GPU upgrade route as the hounds down winner but do you guys think?

The 7700k does not seem like a good price/performance deal to me.  At the end of the day it’s still only 4/8. You’d be competing with a 2400g.  For an extra $100 you could get into a fast 6/12 system, even with motherboard and new memory on top.

the GPU option is better imho simply because it would be transferable to a new system.  The issue there though is the new GPUs appear to be coming out in the still unknown near future.

neither seems particularly great atm, though the GPU is likely less of a bad deal than the CPU.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I would upgrade the gpu, the cpu is still pretty good. You can benefit more in games more by upgrading the gpu than the cpu. In the future I would do a cpu + mobo switch if you have ddr4 ram.
