Upgrading my aged PC. GPU ? CPU? Both?

Hi All,

(first of all I would like to point out that English is not my mother tongue. You may find some grammar mistakes in my posts.
Just tell me, if something is horrible wrong. I always try to translate without any help of translating programs. Thank you mates!)

Linus always points out, that anybody who is interested in PC Tech should use his forum. So here I am 😄

I am doing homeoffice because of the Corona Virus. Also all my plans (holidays, concerts, etc) are cancelled now...
It looks like we even have to cancel our wedding in August... Crazy time!

My friends and me are gaming a lot at the moment. Because of all this free time.
And now I am thinking about upgrading my PC, as it is a few years old already.
But I am not sure where to start. Maybe you are bored or interested enough to help me out 🙂

My PC:
Intel i7 4770 (non k)
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
2x Corsair 4 GB DDR3 1600MHz
2x 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz (I had them laying around from an old workstation)
Gigabyte Windforce OC GTX1070
be quiet 500W 80+ Gold
Several S-ATA SSDs and one mass storage HDD
Old Corsair Carbide something Case (forgot the number)

The GTX1070 is the last piece I upgraded.
All in all a good package I think.

But I got a new Monitor in a sale some time ago.
ASUS ROG PG278QR 144 Hz (165oc)

WQHD is asking for more horsepower now.
I don't even touch the 144 fps in the most Games at the moment.
Except for Games like League of Legends of course.

Metro Exodus and PUBG are more hungry for example.
I "only" get around 100 fps on medium settings in PUBG.

I know I know... I complain on a very high level.
But now where I have this Monitor and all this free time... I want a better experience.

What would you upgrade first?
Would my i7 4770 bottleneck a RTX2070 (Super)? (I am bound to nvidia because of the Gsync Monitor)
Would I gain more fps changing the i7 to a Ryzen? Because of faster RAM etc.?

I am very interested in your thoughts 🙂

Thank you.

Andy

First monitor your cpu and gpu useage in the game that do not reach 144fps. If a core of your cpu is being maxed out or almost maxed out then you are getting cpu bound and a gpu upgrade will not result in much higher framerates.

Whats ur budget???

I didn't think about any budget at the moment.
One guy is selling a RTX2080 for 500 EUR in my town. I am willed to spend that much.

But this might be a stupid idea, because of my old CPU and Platform.

I don't want to buy a new PC for thousands of euros at the moment.

Maybe I should go for a Ryzen 2XXX CPU and Mobo and stay with my GTX1070?
Or grab a RTX2060 + used Ryzen System for 500 EUR in total?

I am absolutely confused, thats why Im asking here 😄

Thank you. I will check this in my Lunch Break in 2 hours.

get a new cpu and motherboard. buying an RTX2080 with a 4770 and DDR3 would be bottleneck hell.

I am collecting those old Dual GPU Cards for fun (they are very cheap here) and I didn't want to pull my PC apart every time I have some Benchmarking fun. So I got a second PC some time ago.
It includes an ASUS B350 PLUS, a Ryzen 1200 and 2x 4 GB DDR4.

Maybe I should swap the Boards.
The B350 also supports Ryzen 3xxx CPUs, after an BIOS Update.
Should I go for a Ryzen 3600? What do you think?

Im not to sure if the 4770 would be a huge bottle neck unless the games are thread hungry as far as i know your cpu is still great as far as instructions per clock goes. my default answer is rtx 2070 ( i may be wrong and it could be a bottle neck)

I have a 4790k and RTX 2080 SUPER, I play on a 4K TV and can achieve a stable 4K 60 in most titles, some with settings turned down, DLSS 2.0 may be changing this though which is awesome.

I have seen benchmarks of higher end i7's and AMD's CPU's showing improved frames in comparison to older generations, sometimes by up to 20-30+ fps, I would indeed say your CPU will hold you back in some situations, but I would wait honestly for AMD's next CPU's and NVIDIA's 3000 series GPU's before upgrading, as it stands now you should be able to push decent FPS with that screen and system, and if not I still think it's worth holding out for an excellent increase of performance for what you're going to spend your money on.

If you must upgrade, I would suggest the GPU first to see if that can tide you over until the new hardware lands, I'd recommend a 2080 for 3440x1440, if you have the lower 1080p WQHD res then a 2070 would be ok. If possible instead of an RTX 2080 or 2070 buy a 1080ti used instead.

Just my 2c

If you are gonna get ryzen be careful with your ram speed cause it's an insane bottle neck for ryzen, to get the best performance on ryzen u need the best ramp speed u can find, like Ddr4 3600mhz or 3200 if u don't got enough money. Always try for 3600 mhz it's worth it.
