Hey guys!

My PC is currently running an Nvidia GTX 1080, an i7 7700k overclocked to 4.8ghz on an MSI Z270 M5.

I am looking to upgrade this. The obvious upgrade is to change that GTX 1080 for a GTX 2080 Ti, but I was curious if it would also be worth the money to swap that i7 7700k for an i9 9900k based on the upgrade I would get.

Let me know! Thanks guys!

I mean, I can work towards saving for the i9 haha, but I want to know if it will be that much of a significant upgrade after getting the 2080 Ti.

Also, I think if I get the i9 I’d have to get a new motherboard, is that correct?

(currently have MSI Z270 M5)

That's correct

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

How many watts do I need?

Any reason for the upgrade? Anything not performing as expected? Keep in mind the rtx 3000 series is expected to launch in the next 2 months.

For a 9900k you'd need a new motherboard too but first if you could answer my first question I can help you further.

also looking at your mobo you would need to get a new mobo which supports the i9 9th gen but you can find ones for not that expensive

And after getting the new mobo, would it be as simple as just plugging in the same hard drive I was using for my Z270 or would I need to do some other stuff.

Low FPS for new games when running them with ultra settings, and to be honest I havent really been up to date with new PC parts ever since I built this pc that I currently have (summer of 2017) which is why Im asking if this upgrade would be worth it at all.

Thanks for letting me know about the rtx3000 series launch coming up.

Worth it? To me not really maybe to you. But ultra settings are really just tiny differences between it and very high that cost a lot of your gpu and cpu to push out. You can easily just go to high or very high and not notice a difference in almost any game. If you still want to upgrade I highly advice you to wait as the rtx 3000 series is coming very soon so getting a 2080ti now when you could've probably gotten a 3080ti for the same price would be silly.

That is true.

Anyway, as I still gather my thoughts on if upgrading is worth it, if I were to get a 3080ti when it comes out or a 2080ti now (just hypothetical), after doing this, would it also be much of an upgrade to get an i9 9900k or does the i7 7700k still hold its ground?

Since your 7700k is already at 4.8ghz it should still hold it's own. So I'd wait and see if it is a limiting factor as that cpu should still do the trick for now. Since the 10000 series form intel is also coming along you should also best wait and see what goes on with that.

Alright. Definitely gonna wait for the 3000 series and then think about it. I’m also thinking that when the 3000 series drops, the price for a 2080 Ti will fall, so it could be a good option if the price does fall by quite a lot, if not, then the 3080 would be the clear choice.

As for the CPU, I think you’re right, not worth upgrading to an i9 9900k since my i7 is at 4.8.

You might have a long wait for the Nvidia 3000 series. The rumours are for a Q4 release due to the ongoing Coronavirus, and also Nvidia waiting to see what AMD does with Navi.

Stick with your current system for a few more months and then see if we get any more info on the gpu releases.
