choosing a NAS / server

Zejtan

Howdy folks.

This question has probably been vented here numerous times before.

And i did some reading on the subject, but it didnt make me much smarter.

i know Nothing about servers and/or NAS.

But i have decided to set something upp.

Mainly as a "cloud" for pictures and documents from pc and my phone.

Looking for as easy as it gets probably since i know nothing about this.

any sugestions ?

should be able to

-2 ( minimum ) drives in raid for redundances ( spelling probably wrong ) one drive dies, still all good setup.

-able to make another user for others like family members so they can get synced from their phones into their own "folder".

did see a LTT clip on one they tested and it looked good.

-sound, would be really nice if it isnt comparable to a jet taking of since i live in a small apartment.

-and things i probably doesnt even know is a "must have" option.

Cheers.

Then you probably want to buy a ready-made one with RAID 5 and 4 drives.

SOmething like a Qnap or ReadyNAS NV+ (my personal fav, though I'm unsure if it does phone access)

If you want network storage done easy look into solutions from companies like Synology or QNAP. They usually come with RAID functionality to protect against drive failure, low noise, should allow user accounts, and I expect support remote access.

Personally I like to build everything myself but to each their own.

 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As I said I'm a DIYer. Those two companies are among the most popular for the home pre-built NAS market. I don't have a deep understanding of what they do and don't support.

I've never used that feature, so I can't say, but if nothing was listed, then it probably doesn't do it.

If you peritise easy. Then I will recommend a Synology or QNAP.

I personaly feel that Synology is the easyist to use. The con of easy to use, is that you have less interface options. That's where I feel that QNAP is harder to use, but have more options in there interface.

i orderd a DS218j 2-Bay, and 2 Seagate BarraCuda  2TB 7200rpm 256MB.

but i think i might put these 2 new disks into my pc, and switch the 2 1 TB modules i have in the pc now into the nas.
