I'm planning on building a micro-ITX PC for my parents since their old PC is slowly dying out. It need to handle standard use (web browsing, HD movies) but no games. It can be stylish, but it must not make TOO much noise (their current one sounds like a jet taking off). Since i have absolutely zero experience with mini-ITX, i want to ask you, what should i get?

My rig: i5 3570k 3.4 GHz, XFX Radeon HD 7950, 8GB 1600MHz Kingston RAM, ASUS P8B75-M, Cooler Master K350, 500GB WD, 550w XFX PSU.

Peripherals: ASUS full HD VE228DE, Razer Taipan, Logitech K200 keyboard (not the best, lol), Wireless PS3 stereo headset (very nice sound).

budget? location?

I live in Denmark, and my budget floats between $550 and $1100 depending on what it will cost. I can maybe use some parts of the old system (it's running XP), though it only has 2GB RAM and an AMD 2 core.

The new apu's have great performance, and this system should be practically silent.

Maybe an i3? With a low end GPU? Integrated graphics should be enough and your parents aren't doing anything CPU intensive.

Yeah i was thinking integrated graphics too, they don't go on GPU intensive tasks. Maybe going to be used as a Netflix machine too.

I would recommend something like an A8/A10, 4GB of 1866Mhz RAM, 250GB SSD, and something like Elite 130 as a case. If you want something a little better I would recommend an i5 and a H81 board.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU:  Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($114.99 @ Newegg)

doesnt mean that the fans arent compatible, its just saying that it can't tell you if the fans can fit or not

That means that it can't check the fan compatibility. The fans will be used for intake, then the second to replace the one that comes with the axp-100

you could lower the Mhz of the ram and get a larger amount of it

Thats not including the OS and peripherals

Yes, they're probably going to need Windows 7 (Home premium or what?)

Windows Home Premium works best. Make sure if they are going to store a bunch of movies or photos, get a HHD.

For real though. If you get one with the 2.5" case, and i5 it's a pretty beast machine for its size.

I think they're going to use Netflix as a movie player, and there's not going to be a lot of photos etc. Just Windows, Spider Solitaire and small programs :)

You don't need it, also this. Also the price deference doesn't matter.

Do you want a Gold rated PSU? To save energy.

Perhaps, if it doesn't go over the budget :)

Can you link to a PCpartpicker list? It makes things a lot easier :)

There wouldn't be much point. You buy the NUC kit, it comes with everything except RAM and the hard drive.

I don't think they're on PCPartPicker.

Then just buy those two, and you're good to go.

The thing is 4.5" x 4.5".
