Hi LTT Community and Staff from Linus Media Group.

I was watching some videos from your Youtube channel... like the Upgrade of your Editing Server or should i say Petabyte Project.

I was wondering i know the hardware side from 45 Drives.

But i was thinking of building a server for my Home.. where i can put my Videos, Pictures, Music and Other Stuff like the Steam Libary.

And now i have some Questions.

Which Os did you choose for your Petabyte Project.

Which Scripts did you use to build those Gigantic Network Drive. (ZFS System)

I would like to know if there is a chance you guys could explain a litte more in detail the process of building a server from the ground up. Or is there a Tutorial on this Side?

And the last Question.

How is it possible that a Great Company like Seagate is Sponsoring ... i would like to have some of these 12TB Drives, but here in Germany these Drives are to expensive.

Sorry for my bad english i hope that anyone understands my post and questions

and last but not least

Thank you Linus, and your Perfect Crew of Linus Media Group. I enjoy all of your Videos.

-> Moved to Servers and NAS

LMG staff rarely answers questions that community is capable of answering. Like this one. They have done tutorials on setting up unRaid or Plex etc. I think they've talked about OS in past videos too, but someone here probably knows better.

As for sponsorship... Seagate gets publicity and endorsement. So that you would spend money. Giving $10k worth of drives to youtuber pays itself back very quickly.

Your questions:

  1. Unraid
  2. these come with Unraid, which is Linux based
  3. as stated before, there's tons of info on the web, including massive video coverage on YT, but in essence, building a server the same as building a PC, be it with different hardware
  4. Unless you are a 1M+ sub youtuber, forget sponsorship. I too love to have a bunch of 16TB drives for personal use (RAID6), but I know I won't be sponsored by anyone except myself ? (and yes, over here these drives are highly expensive as well. Because they're expensive to make ? )

If you're answering specifically his questions, they are not using Unraid for that. I'm fairly certain they are using CentOS, and they are definitely using using GlusterFS on ZFS which most definitely is not something you can do with Unraid. And if OP is wanting to go with ZFS, Unraid is definitely not the answer since the support for it on Unraid is a hack job at best and requires you wasting two drives on the Unraid pool that you could otherwise use in your ZFS pool.

I"ve watched all of the videos for the server upgrades and the special with the guy from 45 drives. And i was so flashed. ...

I would love to see some tutorials from i think it's Anthony and Linus to configure a Server like the whoonyk server. Or a basic settup with security like Firewall. Samba,  i know there is a bunch of videos of this topic but. I like the style of videos from Linus ... and i learn visually not readable.  I know all stuff is there on the sites for samba and so on.

I think a video of a home server build from the ground up.  Would be nice.

It's CentOS which is a derivative of Red Hat linux. Y

Pretty sure Anthony just built it from scratch, its ZFS with GlusterFS for clustering.

It's the same process as building a PC, except choosing a few of the parts may be a bit different depending on your case. As for software, it really depends on your intended case. You could make it as simple as just installing Windows and using the windows built in filesharing and security. Or if you're comfortable with Linux you could go that route. Keep in mind that for building the solution LTT have done requires indepth Linux CLI knowledge, you cannot configure this setup through a GUI. It also requires having an understanding on how nodes and gluster bricks work.

Because they have 10M+ subs. A cheaper alternative is to 'shuck' White labelled Western Digital drives from WD Easystores, this is a very common thing amongst those that want cheap large storage. Much cheaper than retail drives https://www.amazon.com/10TB-Elements-Desktop-Drive-WDBWLG0100HBK-NESN/dp/B07G3QMPB5

whoonyk

It's Whonnock, its a place in BC near Surrey where Linus is from.

Anway GlusterFS on ZFS starts to get very complicated for your average user, and is redundant unless you're looking to build big storage clusters.

If you're just doing 1 storage box, then you'd be better just going with a solution like FreeNAS. Its intuitive and easy to configure and manage.

I have build my Home Server Box myself.  I'm confortable with the console on linux. That's not a problem. I used Ubuntu Server and this server works as a Nas/Streaming/Docker Host. I asked about the whonnok server because i have a friend and he would like a more storage route. In terms of space 50-100 TB. and Freenas suck on his Hardware. He uses a Gigabyte B450 board and 16Gb Ram Ryzen 5 2400ge and has a pcie Sata Card. The install of freenas goes ok. But when he. goes on the webinterface it shows error and he can not login. On his desktop he clears the browser cache and / flushdns on windows command but the error is still there.

I think im going to do a reinstall of freenas when i'm there or do a ubuntu install.

Thanks for the information i will read some stuff about centOs.
