I received my Gigabyte 290 today and the performance is great, but when playing games such as BF4 the temperatures go up to 80C with fan speeds at 80% which gets pretty loud, is this normal?

Depends, your ambient temps would be randomly different to everyone else, giving variability.

What are your ambient temps (weather outside)?

I usually sit about 72-78*c depending on the game, using "up to" 85% fan speed, usually with ambient temps of 24-28*c

From that info alone, sounds normal.

Download GPUZ, and look at the sensors for VRM1, keep it open, play a game for 10mins and check the vrm1 temps.

If its under 95*c your good, if its over, you need better airflow towards your GPU. Aiming for VRM1 temps of always under 90*c would be best.

VRM temps outputting immense heat will heat up the rest of your system when the fans are trying to draw it all out of the card.

The Intakes and exhaust fans may need to be optimized for maximum GPU intake, or maximum speed of heat output from the case itself.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

It's normal because, well, the WF R9 290 was recalled a while ago because the cooler design was inefficient. You may have gotten one of those, but Hawaii pushes out a lot of heat.

80% and 80C ? That is kinda strange, my Sapphire Tri-X 290 is running at 45% in BF4 and it's running at 67C average.

My ambiet temps are about 25C, I'm not too bothered about the temps, it's how loud the card is that's bothering me atm.

The retailer I bought the card from on;y received it a week ago, I'm contemplating sending it back and getting a different one now.

The Tri-X cooler seems to be a fair bit better than the Windforce, what sort of overclocks are you getting?

Maybe look at a Msi gaming 290? They supposedly have the quietest card. Temps should be around the same.

p.s. dont forget to change your sig!

Oh, I forgot to mention, I use a custom fan curve, NOT AUTO. My results will obviously vary from auto based fan speeds.

Make your own with MSI afterburner, trying to keep it @ less than 70% "up to 85+*c" then higher if it gets hotter from there.

It looks pretty good here but it makes me think I've got a bad card when the Windforce 290X is only 73C at load.  Haha thanks, I'll change my sig soon.

Yea, if you do go for it, it should be quieter, cant say cooler though, as I cant promise that do to varying conditions. Let us know what happens!

My settings as exact as that may differ in what I get, to what you get,....so whatever settings you preference for "noise vs heat"

Idle temp of 67*c is pretty high...

Im idling at 45*c-50*c, have any fans in front of case pointing towards gpu?

Side panel fan ability? If possible adding some more airflow to the GPU will help a little...

Seems too high, I' be RMA'ing it if I saw 67*c idle.

I've got 4 fans on the side panel all pointing at it, it doesn't really help.  I'm probably going to return it and get the Tri-X or DCUII.  :(

Yeah sounds about right, as it seems with your card, something isnt right....

I'd be Swapping/Dealing with it as you are, its just not operating within "normal hot" operation.

@SkilledRebuilds, I changed to the 13.12 drivers and I'm now idling at around 45C at stock speeds and 82 at load:

Were the temperatures you said earlier at your overclocked speeds?  I set a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner, how does this look?:

@Jamdude

Looks perfect now mate, fucking good job :) Seems the driver change fixed it. Fan profile looks good, you could even extend it further if its too noisy still, although I'd not like anything above 85*c max  on the core, thats just me.

I was always at stock speeds, I only OC'd for benchmarking stuff,Now I keep her stock,.. as you know, it pumps out so many frames we don't need to OC yet until games bring us down to under 70fps.

Bf4 gives me 80-110fps 1080p Ultra, but when future games average 70fps and have heavy dips below 60, thats when I'd apply the OC.

Thanks a lot for your help, it's really appreciated!  My card seems to be working as expected now, my idle speeds are usually 50C at 5-10% load which seems acceptable.  I'm yet to monitor VRM temperatures while gaming yet so fingers crossed for that one.

I play at 1440p so unfortunately can't have every setting on BF4 maxed out, I'm playing on ultra with no AA and medium post processing so I never dip below 60fps :)
