Is the 3gb of the 780ti enough?

Naimdor

Hi, so I posted a post already about me deciding between 290 and 780ti (1080p), still didn't make up my mind but I though about something.

The 290 has 4gb and the 780ti has only 3gb.

Do you think ,(thinking a year or two ahead), that the 290 will actually be better in some games due to the VRAM advantage??

@slickpc said in the 780ti review that it was close to the limit of his VRAM and that's on games right now and I guess games will only become more demanding...

I think in a year or two you'll have a $700 GPU that is half as fast as the new fastest card. 3gb vs 4gb won't matter because neither the 780 Ti or 290x will matter.

Buying high end to hold is probably the worst move you can make in GPUs.

At 1080p, games still are using around 1.5gb of vram. You'll be fine.

Also the GTX 780 Ti is quite a bit faster than the R9 290 (and more expensive), so why this strange choice? If it was the 290 vs 780... But yes, it should be enough like ForsakenLive said before.

I have some more money and I can't decide if to just save them aside or add to the gpu and get better one...

So the choice is really up to you. But you should not decide based on the amount of Vram.

I'm just afraid to add the money, get the TI and in a year see that the 290 run better because the TI get chocked on vram

The Ti will not be bottlenecked by VRAM @1080p any time soon. It wont be able to run at the games @ ultra by the time you need 3gb.

3GB is just fine. Hell, 2GB is still enough today.

I find it funny that someone made an account "1080p" and you accidentally linked your comment to them.

I would say it is not likely to happen. There is still some headroom left and performance will not crumble instantly if you get to 3Gb. At least I made this experience.

E.g. the 290Xs 4gb are meant for 1600p to 4K resolutions. If you are still uncomfortable with your decision, why don't you think about a 290X or 780 instead?

Just another example: My 770s are still faster in BF4 than my friends 7970 CF (without Mantle, which we did not test yet) although they sometimes use 2,1GB Vram...

We'll you de make me feel better about the ti thank you, and I don't want 290x or 780 because it seems a waste adding the money from 290 because the performance gain isn't like the ti...

a single 780 ti is not good enough for x3 4k XO and probably will a dual 290x XO

anyways 780 is still a powerful card and nothing to sneeze at specially the 780 ti

Won't happen, but the better plan would be only as much as you need presently and adjust accordingly when more is in order.

Meaning get the card you need today, sell it tomorrow for the card you need tomorrow.

Maxwell is looking very good at this point, double a 780 Ti seems reasonable... Buy what you need now, save your money for the next node.

At 1440P yes, though you are close to reaching the limit. If you want to do 4K gaming, the 290's extra GB of VRAM will definitely help. I suggest two-way sli with the 780, since the 290's price is way out of whack.

Then you do not even need a 780Ti, a 770 will do just fine. I have a 770 with 2gb and I can basically max out any game with AA maxed @60FPS as well except for Crysis 3 and Last Light.
