A CPU overheating doesn't usually kill it right away, it may either cause thermal throttling or thermal shutdown but it's supposed to have safety features to protect itself.

just make sure you don't consistently overheat it

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Well to give a short history of what happened...this tower belongs to my nephew...he built a few years back and it was idling close to 100° after he heard a popping sound from the tower. He didnt bother to fix but opted to build a new rig. Mind you he was using the old tower for about a month before he had the new rig ready to go so i assume the overheating happened several timesHe is offering the tower to me for 250 as is since he can't guarantee it wont crap out within a few days or mi utez for that matter. My thought was to build a newrig using only the cpu and replace everything else

If something went pop, it was probably the power supply or something, not the CPU. Idling close to 100 degrees means stop using the PC and fix it, I hope he knows that before he ruins something else.

Either way, I bet there's a good chance the CPU is still good. At the very least, the ram and hard drive/SSD are still good, and the GPU if there was one, so tossing a new PSU (and if needed, mobo) into the same case is a good call.

i7-8700K is like what 2.5 years old?

And your nephew had it for several years and overheats to 100C?

Anyway, modern CPUs will shutdown before it gets hot enough for any critical damage.

Just open the computer, clean it, reapply thermal paste and maybe change the cooler (Noctua recommended).
