Which memory should i buy for a ryzen 7 3700x?

Go to solution Solved by Larri,

I would avoid buying 32GB of ram for your use case, it will go unused MOST of the time. As for the ram you have already, thats a tough situation, its so similar to what you would buy now. Depending on the quality, you may be able to overclock it to 3000/3200mhz, if you can then just keep that. If you cant get it past 2666, then I would go ahead and upgrade, Ryzen benefits so much from fast memory. Buy a 3200mhz 2x8gb Kit, it should only run you about $60 USD. You will likely be able to OC this to 3600mhz, so I wouldn't bother buying a 3600mhz kit.

Hey guys,

I need some help regarding how to choose which memory I should buy for my upgraded rig.

I wanted it to handle gaming, streaming and some light video editing. Also I wanted to be able to use it for some extended time without the need to upgrade again in a year or two.

I upgraded my cpu from an Intel core i5-7400 to an amd ryzen 7 3700x paired with an msi x570 gaming edge wifi motherboard.

And my gtx1060 6gb to an 8GB MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER

As memory I was using 16gb ddr4 corsair vengeance memory with a speed of 2133MHz,

And was thinking to upgrade it to a higher clock speed and was looking into the trident z ddr4 3200Mhz cl16 or 3600Mhz cl18.

But after reading about timings and that the 3600 might not give any improvement etc, I'm not really sure what to buy anymore and because I only build a pc once before and don't have any knowledge whatsoever, I figured I'd ask you guys.

Now the question, which memory would you guys recommend buying for that build mentioned above? And would 16 GB of ram be enough or should I go for 32gb right away?

As Larri stated, 32 GB is a little too much for your use case. 3200 MHz is the sweet spot for ryzen. I would purchase a Viper RAM set because of their lifetime warranty. Having a 2x8GB will allow you to get extra ram if needed.

Others have lifetime warranties as well, infact since there are only a few RAM manufacturers it stands to reason.

3600MHz is the sweetspot for Ryzen 3xxx, so the 3600MHz will be good and you can tighten timings with some tweaking.

Also, if you routinely use near or over 16GB then 32 is fine.  I go over 16GB often, it's not uncommon.

I have the 3700x - not the exact same usecase as you, not really streaming, but yeah...
I have 16gb of G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600 CL16, upgraded from a Corsair kit 3000 CL15, because I could get a good prize for that.
I was going with Paul's (Hardware) recommendation from a few years ago, that he got from Crucial, that speed is generally preferred over latency and wanted 3600 cl19 or 18, but the cl16 was 4-5 dollars more expensive, so I went with that.
I'm really happy with it, dunno exactly the numbers, but playing games @1440p, I noticed a somewhat big difference. I play a lot of Post Scriptum, it seems to be up a scale of about 10% (with a 1080ti) - but that's a very onesided perspective. In CSGO I saw basically no difference... so...

I'd say: Go 3600mhz, that's what everyone of the reviewers seems to say... but I dunno how big the difference will be scaling the latency...
