Is ram chipset-specific?

Go to solution Solved by Quadrum,

Ram is not chipset specific. Any ddr4 unregistered ram will work with any desktop motherboard. It will work for your build. Why do you need 64gb, I’m curious.

I was planning on getting these for my i9-9900k and z390 designare gigabyte motherboard:

https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-64gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232333?Description=64 gb 3200 mhz ram&cm_re=64_gb_3200_mhz_ram-_-20-232-333-_-Product

But the website says z370, I didn't think ram was chipset-specific, will it work with my build?

I'm getting it for all those GAMING FPS!! No I am joking, I am building the best workstation for music production that I can afford. I've been torn between 32 and 64 gb, but in Linus' latest video about the mac pro they recommended over 32 gb of ram in a music production workstation, which is what convinced me to go for 64. Here is the build if you're interested, I've gotten a lot of feedback on this forum and made adjustments accordingly:

That’s cool! I also do music production, currently deciding whether to upgrade my current 32gb to either 64gb or 128gb when I upgrade my computer. Likely going to stick with Intel for this new build (10980xe) because for my needs I get better audio management and the ability to stick with macos, though I can’t go in detail on these forums about that.

While RAM is not chipset-specific, I would make sure your motherboard supports the RAM you would like to buy, to ensure maximum compatibility.

It should still work even if it's not on the supported RAM list, as long as the frequency and total GB is accepted by the MB. Being on the list does ensure that it will work at it's best, though.
