I have 2 1tb hard drives but one runs at 100% utility and i dont know why. I tend to lag at games like fortnite on best settings when a friend with worse specs does just fine at best settings. I need help

Random unlikely thought:

Are you maybe running a memory cache on a HDD maybe?  It’s such an incredibly out of date practice no one’s done it for many years but the capacity still exists.  That would slow your whole machine down to HDD speeds and completely bury the drive the cache was on.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Where is your OS installed? On an SSD or on a HDD?

Is the same drive also where your games are installed?

Now that I think of it, both of the drives have an OS. However, that isnt the issue because ive had this for a while now before adding the new drive. I have windows 10 added onto the same drive where my games are and what I play off of etc. No i do not have an SSD just yet.

Being honest with you, I dont know much about all that since Im still learning. All I know is that 1. I only have about 150gb of the 1tb on that drive. 2. its running at 100% UTIL and after a while it calms down but goes between low and high. I dont have an SSD yet and all of my games and softwares and OS are all on the same drive.

Only way for me NOT TO LAG is to play on the lowest settings possible. I seriously cant even mantain over 60fps on medium or high. It will fluctuate between 200fps and dip to 20 a lot. I doubt its my specs. Im sure I have good specs.

I didn’t intend to post on a new question :/  error on my part.  There will be likely better more current advice from others.

I try to avoid just posted comments, because there are people here who know how current stuff works.  After posting I noticed the post had been up for only a minute and had an “oh shit” moment.  Dunno how it happened.

In the unlikely event you don’t get better answers:

how about this one:

do you have “virtual memory” set up in any app at all?  Virtual memory is a common name for disk caching.   This might also be something else totally different.  It’s just what popped into my head.

I dont think so? I dont know much of that so i doubt it. I checked on my pc and it says adjust for better performance of programs and it says 2432mb on total paging for all drives or something like that.

When I first boot up my pc, it is SLOWWWW. The disk uses 100% and its horrible. After leaving it on for a while it calms down and goes to around 20% usage and on games it could go up to 100% again. I am connected straight with ethernet so I never have any lag with internet. I just have incredibly low frames. All my drivers are up to date and all my components are working just fine. Just low frames.

It seems like your HDD is what is bottle necking your PC. The slow boot time is even better smoking gun proof that it is indeed the culprit. I would replace one of your HDD's with a good SSD and install your O.S and games on it. It worked wonders for me when I did. If you are getting a low ping rate when gaming online, then you know its not likely a network related issue but more a hardware issue. There is a reason why the next generation of consoles are finally switching over to an SSD, its because the speed difference between an HDD vs SSD is like night and day. Here is a list of SSD's you can get from Best Buy. I recommend a 2TB one only for the space.

Gotcha, I was thinking of getting an SSD eventually but I am running on a low budget at the moment. So you recommend me putting all my games and my OS on the SSD. Would I have to install them all over again or is there a way I can transfer all of that from my HDD to the SSD? Also, Is there something less expensive Lol a 2tb is like $250

(I just spend $250 on the NEW STRIX OC vega 56. I think that was a good deal... was it not?)

There is this process called 'cloning' that allows you to migrate all of your data without having to install them again. I haven't tried it myself but others on here may be able to help you with that. There are tutorials out there on how to do it though.

As far as the SSD, it depends on what your budget is. I wouldn't go any lower than a 1TB SSD. Here are two that I'd look into. I'm only going with Samsung because they are a reputable company and I have a Samsung SSD myself.

One thought about SSDs: there are ones with cache and ones without cache.  The cacheless ones are often cheaper.  You probably don’t want one.  Doesn’t need a lot of cache.  That it exists is what is important.

Well, what is your CPU usage during gaming? That CPU isn't exactly the best you can get from AMD but it shouldn't bottle neck your PC playing Fortnite, since Fortnite isn't really all that CPU intensive. Here is one video of someone playing it with your CPU. I doubt its your CPU based on the video's I've seen, but you can check it to be sure.

Ive seen a lot of videos on things kinda like mine and they dont seem to have issues like I do. I bought my CPU before I had a job but now I can afford another one if I have to. Whats a decent budget amd CPU thats good with a B450 tomohawk mobo. Also, my cpu usage stays well within noraml ranges aswell as the temp.

The two that I linked has cache memory. It says "Cache Buffer Size", not sure if that's what you mean.

Here is a performance benchmark between the two CPU's in case you are wondering. Overall, the 3600X beats the piss out of the Ryzen 7 1700 even though it has less cores and threads. Its a really good CPU for its price.

Yeah! I was just looking at that thats insane. I will maybe try and sell my 7 1700 for a fair price and buy that soon because holy cow is that a big difference. I am going to try my pc on a couple different games to see if the lag persists. If it does, I will most likely invest into a SSD.

? Yeah, AMD has been kicking some serious ass lately with there new motherboards and CPU's, really proud of them. I'm really rooting for them to 'disrupt the market' in similar fashion with their coming 'big navi GPU's, give nvidia a run for their money. The main reason why the 3600X performs so much better than an older CPU with a higher thread and core count is because the architecture its based on is far more efficient. When comparing Intels CPU to AMD's new 3000 series CPU's that uses 7NM Zen 2 architecture, you'll see the same overall performance, yet the 3000 CPU's will give you the same performance with a much lower utilization. We're talking 30-40% lower on average, in some cases even higher than that depending on the game. This video proves it, comparing the Ryzen 7 3700X to Intel's I7 9700k, same performance, yet the usage rate is much lower for AMD chips. Watchdogs 2 is the only game where the usage rate was largely the same.

Wow. you def seem to know what youre talking about. I used to be a die hard intel fan until i discovered ryzen and its wonders. Real apple vs android type thing lol
