at that point it doesn't matter what their reason is. No body is going to experience slow downs of their phone and think "my battery is getting old and they are slowing down my phone to save it".

 

again, to drive the point home; They didn't tell people, so as far as i'm concerned, they did it with the intention that most people wouldn't know the real reason for the slowdown and spend money on a new phone.
