So i'm upgrading my rig to bring it up to speed as my FX 8350 is bottlenecking my system severely. I upgraded my graphics card from a 1060 to a 2080 super just before christmas and thats all good. But...

So i bought a new case to put all my new gear in. Corsair iCUE 465X. I really liked the look of the case even without the RGB, but the RGB was a nice bonus. But the iCUE Lighting Node CORE misled me pretty badly. The case comes with 3 LL120 fans... But the lighting node only works if everything plugged into it is the same, so when i get a water cooler i will have to replace the fans on it with LL120s if i want to use that to control the rgb. I was also misled into thinking the lighting node was a fan hub, but its not. Its only an RGB hub, so i still need 3 fan headers or splitters to make em actually spin, which i didn't think was going to be the case. I bought this thing a month ago and left it sitting in its box until i could afford the other components. So i only discovered the shortcomings now. The rest of the case is pretty nice for the price though.

So this week i bought a new mobo and CPU. Got a 3700x, because i couldn't justify going up to the 3800x or the 3900x for gaming. The 3950x would have been worth it, but that was a bit outside my budget. The mobo i had intended to buy was the Gigabyte X570 Gaming X... Somehow i must have clicked the wrong thing, because i ended up with the Gigabyte X570 UD. I checked my receipts and its my mistake, not theirs. So now instead of 2 M.2 slots i've only got 1... With no heatsink... Next i assumed (like an idiot) that i could use my old RAM until i could afford to get some new sticks (about a fortnight from now, was going to get 2 M.2's then as well). But of course they don't fit and aren't supported even if they did. So instead of getting up and running today, its going to be at least 2 weeks before i can fire this thing up.

TL:DR

1. Lighting Node CORE is a massive let down and very misleading as to its function. Perhaps if corsair actually had a product page that described its function, but i cant find one. There's a tiny bit in the page for the 465x and 220T cases, but neither really explains the product.

2. I clicked the wrong motherboard and ended up with less functionality than I'd wanted.

3. I didn't consider that my RAM is too old to be compatible with modern technology.

Still to buy: RAM, M.2 drive, AIO water cooler, and something to actually sort out the RGB.

Modern computer RGB seems to me to be all about the scam.  The whole proprietary thing is completely artificial and I will have no part in it myself.  Depending on where you got the mobo you can still return it.  I’m not a giant fan of x570 in general myself, particularly since you have a pcie3.0 gpu.  Maybe go better quality b450 (there are b450 boards that can handle that cpu just fine) and use the money saved to get some usable memory.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I wanted the PCIe4.0 for the M.2 slots more than anything else.

I've already mounted the motherboard into the case and installed the CPU and cooler. I'll have to see what i can do about returning it, but right now i'm too frustrated to look into it. I'll have to work out postage and everything if i even can return it.

The bigger question is where did you buy it from and what is their return policy.  You don’t need to look at it to find that out.

pcie 4.0 only even helps with m.2 if you have an extremely fast m.2 Nvme card anyway.  They can cost a couple hundred.  If you buy a pcie 3.0 m.2 card it does nothing.

PC Case Gear

I can return it, but they charge 15% restocking fee for opened products.

Ergh.  Math would be required to see if it’s worth doing.  A good b450 with 2 m.2 3.0 slots can be had in the usd$100 range.  The tomahawk max is quite popular for around $115.

I don't think i want to go with b450. The whole point is some level of future proofing, so PCIe4.0 is a must. If i do anything i would get the mobo i had planned on, but failed to click on. The 8350 has lasted me this long because it had everything that was new at the time and that stuff took a while to be superseded. No, i think I'll wear the Mobo mistake for now and replace it if it becomes an issue. Its not like i was going to raid the m.2 drives or anything, i was just going to stick windows on one and games on the other. Windows can just continue to live on my ssd instead.
