No Post Troubleshooting

Go to solution Solved by Chiyawa,

Well, through your troubleshooting steps, I would say I highly suspect your motherboard is faulty. There might still be one step you haven't try:

Shut down the power, and remove the CMOS battery, try pushing the power switch of your PC for 30 seconds, then plug everything back and see if it post.

If the system doesn't post, there could be 2 reasons:

- Chipset, or the motherboard controller faulty,

- BIOS EEPROM faulty.

I thought LGA1150 is for Intel 4th gen Core series CPU. Even if you have 3rd gen processor, it won't fit in the motherboard.

Hey all,

I came into a build that I'd love to get working. Here is the build:

I can't seem to get it to post, and have done some troubleshooting on my end.

I also went through the advice on Linus' video about troubleshooting failure to post.

  • PSU is delivering power to all elements. (Which also means that the MOBO is receiving and distributing power on some level.)
  • I disassembled and reconnected all elements to a separate PSU I know is working. In this step I removed the GPU, RAM, CPU/Cooler and reassembled to verify they are properly installed.
  • Attempted with monitor hooked up to both GPU and to the MOBO to test APU.
  • GPU works outside of the build
  • I have attempted multiple RAM configurations. (Though now thinking I haven't tried with other RAM units. I'll try that tonight with sticks I know are working.)
  • I double checked the pins in both the socket and on the CPU and can't seem to find any that look bent or out of place.
  • I attempted to put in a HDD that I know is working. (I know that HDD isn't required for post. I tried it both ways.)

I don't have a second MOBO or 3rd Gen intel CPU to cross examine those elements.

So as far as I can tell the issue is either the MOBO or the CPU. (And again, when I get home I'll try the RAM in a working system.)

I also can't seem to find the CMOS switch on this thing. So perhaps that's another issue to explore.

Do you guys see any obvious steps I seem to have missed, or any other advice?

I'd love to not have to go buy a new MOBO.

You should still be able to clear the cmos without the switch, just power off then pull the cmos battery for about 15 seconds or so

Correct. I typoed (and will be editing it.) I do have the i5-4430 in there, not a 3rd gen.

Even if CMOS was the issue, shouldn't it still post and give me error codes?

I don't get any beep codes or anything like that when I try starting up.

Not necessarily, if the issue is something with a bios setting it may not post at all or give any errors. It might not matter if the board is busted, but it's worth a shot I have seen it fix a lot of no posts

So if I pop the CMOS battery out and put it back in, is that also resetting the BIOS?

Yes, it will set all bios settings back to default
