my current router is absolutely horrible and needs to be replaced in the near future. Because of problems like that i cant port forward on it without it suddently dying every 15 minutes :/ Which is not ideal as i play a lot of games and end up being the one who hosts the servers. And i have allways wanted to build my own router and home server. so that is what i am going to do probably.

But i need some input on the parts, since i do not have any experience when it comes to building a router.

This is what i've got:

motherboard: http://www.gigabyte.eu/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4747#ov

ram: 8 gb of corsair vengeance 1600mhz

psu: http://www.chieftec.eu/en/accessories/ix-01b/ac-power-adapter/cdp-090itx.html

case: http://www.chieftec.eu/images/stories/produkte/chassis/itxtower/compact-series/ix-01b/files/IX-01B_CHASSIS-DATASHEET-EN.pdf

harddrive: some totally random harddrive that i took from an old computer : )

what do you think? would this work? if not, please come with other alternatives :)

I dont think you need 8GB of fancy ram for a simple router :P (even 2GB of cheap RAM should be fine)

If you're building from scratch too, it's probably best to get a dedicated NIC alongside it. Obviously, the easier alternative is to just buy a router. i found a cheap refurbished cisco one with all the decent features, wifi and 4 ports for about £25 (UK), but you will get a bit of a good experience building your own.

well, i chose that motherboard because it is fairly cheap and has dual gigabit ports, so that i can use a tiny case :) so do i need an extra nic?

My bad I didn't see the dual ports... Perhaps gigabyte has router in mind with this then...
