So my desktop was running fine when suddenly I lost display output and keyboard connection (or at least the RGBs turned off). The fans were still running and everything else seemed normal. I restarted a couple times to no results.

I then did the following:

Reset CMOS Battery (resulted in keyboard RGB now permanently on even with desktop powered off, but no display output)

Pulled RAM off slot 2 (resulted in normal function)

Placed same RAM stick onto slot 3 (resulted in normal function, both sticks operating normally as far as I can tell)

My question is, why would something like this happen and will I still be able to run dual-channel using slots 3 and 4 rather than 2 and 4?

My specs:

2x 8GB RAM (Ripjaws I think)

i5-6600k non-OC

Asus Z-170e MOBO

GTX 1070ti

This has happened a couple times before too, and sometimes it just...works again after I leave it alone for a bit. No idea why, but I'm worried it will get progressively worse. I'm at work right now so I can't use CPU-Z to check if it's running dual-channel right now, but would it be correct to assume it's a mobo issue rather than a RAM stick issue since it's the slot that matters?

Thanks for all the help!

It sounds like a mobo issue, but check your cpu socket. Are there any bent pins?

No bent pins that I was able to identify. The strange thing is that it happens so sporadically. I'll get this issue once every couple months at most. I would assume that a mobo or cpu issue would be more frequent and get progressively worse until it fails.
