Hey guys as I am sure you are aware, the new AMD Radeon 7990 just dropped today. To make this short, I am going to have about $1050 saved up at the end of the semester specifically for a new GPU to fit the rest of my build, and an upgrade from my current 7870.

I can not seem to decide between; 1) the new 7990, 2) GTX Titan, 3)2x 680/7970, 4)780.

I will be running 3x1080p (http://www.amazon.com/Acer-H236HL-bid-23-Inch-Widescreen/dp/B00AZMLIDQ) monitors for a grand total of 5760x1080 so thats why I "need" all this horsepower.

Please post your suggestion and reasoning below, and thanks for the help. :)

Rig spec(as of now):

Intel i7 3930k@4.6gh

Gigabyte Windforce 7870

ASRock x79 Extreme 11

16GB G.Skill Ripjaw 2133mhz

Silencer MKII 950w

H100i(4x Noctua NF-F12 PWM)

Caselabs Magnum TH10(will be loop later)

It would be bottlenecked by it's wide memory bus is only 256bit compared to the 7970's 384bit.

But then AMD's drivers are still having issues with dropped frames and whatnot. Not to mention CF configs seem to be a bit more finnicky than SLI (at least that's the general impression I get). I would still personally go for the 680's

Two 680's/7970's would give the best performance.  Titan would give the smoothest performance.  The 780 may not be out for a while (everything so far is just rumors).  AMD will have their frame time issues fixed in June or July but until then any CF setup is bound to have more stutter than an SLI setup.  Given all that its up to you.

either wait for the 7990 or get the titan. The titan is good as its for gaming however you can mess with it and it can become a decent workstation gpu

I will probably not be getting 680s. The 2Gb versions do not have enough vRAM and the 4Gb models are much more expensive so to get 2 of them would be much more expensive than the Titan. As we know Linus is, I too am a fan of single GPU solutions vs Multi GPU solutions but I could go Multi if it would yield better performance gains vs a Titan. I am very torn over the 7990 vs the Titan, AMD said the 7xxx was going to be a focus for the near future so I know the support will be there, but at the same time I hate the thought of limiting my expansion because the card already has 2 gpus, where as the Titan is a single, so if the scaling is every optimised I could get another Titan and crush any solution on the market. (that may or may not make sense, hard to explain).

Just wait see how AMD tackles the latency issue and how much improvements there would be in the 7990.

Driver coming out in the summer will fix the latency issues. Ryan from PcPer put up a video of Crysis 3 running the current drivers and the prototype driver. The prototype driver, even on youtube, was noticeably better.

Yer i've seen the video but the point i am trying to make is, when they do release that driver, it won't completely fix the latency issue or it won't be fully perfect.

I guess. I don't think it will ever be completely perfect though. That said, I'd get a titan just to say I have a titan :P

Probably not but i am interested in the crossfiring latency issue which is horrendous. But i do wonder if this fix, is only for the 7000 series as i have 2 6950.

Is the stuttering noticeable on the 6950's? I thought that it wasn't really a problem on the 6000 series?

As Linus always says, single card solutions are almost always better than dual card solutions.  What I am trying to tell you here is that you should get a Titan.  With 6GB of RAM you will probably never hit the cap with games today so it is also very future-proof.

I think what I am going to do is wait for the 780s to be relased. If they are within %85 of the Titan's performance and ~$500 then I will get two of them, but if they are more like ~$650 then I will just get 1 Titan.

If you're using multiple monitors, get a titan. It is also pretty future-proof, as it has ALOT of vram, and you could always throw in a couple more. However, in most circumstances, a 690 will outperform a titan, because it is essentially two titan gpus on one board.

It will improve scaling & reduce latency in all crossfire configurations, they're introducing a new technology called Heart Beat, that rolls the frames at exactly the same pace, thus the name Heart Beat.

The prototype driver has eliminated so much latency to the point where you can't tell the difference between crossfire & SLI.

You can find the comparisons on PCPer.com

It's also worth mentioning that this frame latency issue has had a fix for a long time but people tend to intentionally forget about it for some reason -_- .

It's called Dynamic V-Sync , Tom's Hardware tested it & concluded that it's extremely effective.

You can use it by downloading RadeonPro

I hope this helps !
