System not detecting HDD. Please help!

Go to solution Solved by DIV1D3,

@DIV1D3 so its an internal drive.

some motherboards require you to enable sata ports in the bios allot of dell are are like this and others.

did the system have 2 drives before the new os.

A trick i sometime use is to hijack the sata going to the cd drive if i don't know the bios password or if i am too lazy to reconfigure it. before and after with the dells i work with

Nah it's all right, seems that a Windows update fixed it, sooooo many updates, I got at least 80!

Hi, so this afternoon I planned to do a clean install of Windows 7 HP, which I did. Only problem is that when I tried to copy my Steam games over from my old HDD to my new one the old HDD doesn't show up. It vibrates and works with my laptop, so the HDD itself can't be faulty. I've tried 2 different SATA connectors and ports but still nothing, it doesn't even show up in the storage section of Computer Management. I would really like to know what you guys think and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

1. Install windows updates and try again.

2. check my computer->manage->disk management - is it there?

3. search for help/drivers on manufacturers website.

drivers for hdds? okay i dont think that is the issue...

One question... is windows still installed on the old hdd, if it ever was? also see if it is detected in bios

If windows was installed the system might not recognize the hdd and you might have to boot from it again to copy the files

As I said it doesn't show up in Computer Management. I'll try to find out about the windows updates but I only just got them so ill see if its there later this arvo. If that doesn't work than I'll try get something from Toshiba. Thanks for your advice.

It has Windows, but I don't see how that would make it not appear, it has appeared multiple times already. I've already copies my Steam games over when I first built it and when I did a clean install, idk why it isn't working this time. The UEFI doesn't detect it either, I'm sure that there isn't a problem wih the drive, connectors or ports as I've tried with two SATA cables and two different ports on my mobo.

well just because it spinns up and all the connectors are looking fine does not mean that the drive is fine. In fact there are many points of failure in a hdd. For me there is no other conclusion than the drive being dead. Maybe let it rest for a couple of days and then try and quickly do a backup

@DIV1D3 when you say it works with your laptop is this a external usb hard drive?

if so (if not) open device manager.  are there any unknown devices. i am thinking you missed the chip set driver after the new os and your os cant handle the usb hd controller.

Its a 2.5" internal Toshiba, it has the same windows on it and my new PC doesn't detect it at all, I'll see if it can in about 10mins, just need to take it out of my laptop and put it in mah desktop. I'm thinking it might work as I just got a heap of updates last night and it only applied them when I booted.

It's not dead, as I have said it works completely fine in my laptop.
