i7 9700k, i9 9900 Non K, or i9 9900k

Go to solution Solved by PowerBaller,

Gaming: 8C8T can already handels everything, even better than 8C16T. That means a 9900KS with hyperthreading off holds the absolute 1st seed, followed by HT off 9900K , then 9700K, then 9700. But even the actuall performance difference between 9700K and 9900KS is around 1%.

Productivity: The upgrade from 8C8T to 8C16T is far less than enough. I didnt see a reason not to swtich to AMD's hot trending 3950x 3900x, or the discounted threadripper.

So unless you can sell your 9700 for a very good price, or you have other use for an extra CPU, upgrading 9700 to any 9th gen desktop cpu yields little significance.

Currently I have an i7 9700 non k.  I want to upgrade, and I am willing to OC.  Should I buy the i7 9700k and overclock ($530 CAD), buy the i9 9900 non k and save me time ($620 CAD), or buy the i9 9900k to overclock (Now $640 CAD on sale, original is $700 CAD)?

PSU is 850 80+ Gold

Your motherboard matters. Unless you have a "Z" series board (Z370, Z390) then you can't overclock.

If you do have a "Z" series board, then the only meaningful upgrade is the 9900K.

Alternatively, you could buy a Ryzen 3rd gen CPU if your reasons for upgrading are due to needing more cores. For gaming the 9700 should be more than enough.

Why are you upgrading?

I guess I just want something new???  Probably should just wait for Intel 10th gen desktop CPUs.

Intel's 10th gen might not even support the same motherboards. If you don't need something new, just stay with your 9700.

If you want something new anyway, I'd suggest maybe looking at the 3700x or 3900x

I'd spend the money on more SSDs personally.
