Hello all! I’ve watched a lot of Linus’s videos and didn’t even know there was a forum till now so I figured it’d be best to make an account and ask for help/guidance on my first build

all parts have been ordered and should arrive by the end of the week.

dell optilex 3020 refurbished mother board

as well as an optilex cpu cooler

the CPU is a intel Xeon e3 -1230 3.20ghz

A-Tech 8gb (2x4) pc3-12800 DDR3 240pin

Nvidia 660ti GPU

And a Corsair cx750 PSU

and case ofcourse

I know this is a weak build I was on a tight budget my question to you guys is

is this okay?? It should work properly if everything goes according to plan and works lol what would be some hiccups I might run into if any??

Physically yes, however with further reseach and talking to my friend he said it’s possible it won’t accept the processor bc it might not match the BOIS or something...

why why are I asking me? I’m asking u guys lol

I think it's the issue that you are asking AFTER buying the parts.  Logic would have you asking BEFORE.

Where are you located and what's your budget?  You can build a brand new Ryzen machine for ultra low prices, I wouldn't have bought what you're going with at all.

You bought the stuff before asking us, we merely assumed you'd done the research.

Also, the optiplex 3020 motherboard has a custom power connector (at least the one I"m looking at) and won't work with a standard 24 pin power connection.

I think he was asking you because that's generally something you should look at before you start ordering parts.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Thanks for the friendly help everyone

If you had asked us ahead of time, we could have saved you some money.

As it stands, I'd suggest sending the parts back and getting your money back, then tell us your budget and we can help building you a proper system for that budget.

You guys are right! But like I said this is my first time I ordered parts listed from someone on a different forum and ordered the wrong motherboard.

So now that we got it out of the way that I should’ve asked first and other than sending everything back printing labels waiting for shipping and processing my return would t it be simpler to go to A local computer store and ask them what they have that will work for my processor and psu ramm etc and buy that? Then send the one item that wasn’t going to work back and get a refund instead of the whole thing

Probably, however.....

That CPU is quite old, and the chances of a place having a new motherboard for that CPU are probably nil.

So it'll have to be a used one.

ALSO.....

the CPU is a server-level one, which typically wants ECC RAM. It may, or may not, be happy with off-the-shelf stuff. Will depend on which mobo you find.

Motherboard

Here is an extensive list for you

https://www.pc-specs.com/cpu/Intel/Xeon_E3_Series/Xeon_E3-1230/2366/Compatible_Motherboards

This assumes the version of your Xeon you bought was version 0, they went up to (IIRC) version 3, and this list may not hold true for anything other than v0 of your CPU.

Since the list is so large, you'd be better off narrowing down your choices based on mobo makers, and seeing if you can find something from them locally. I'm a fan of MSI and Asus, FWIW, others will have different viewpoints.
