Hi everyone,

I’m a new builder who just finished setting up a new rig.  However, I’m a bit desperate in getting my rig stable.  If there is information that I didn’t supply that I need to, just let me know.  I get a lot of irql errors seemingly when I’m installing games or downloading other large files.  I also get whea errors as well occasionally.  I used CPU-Z to stress test the CPU and the max temp was 61 Celsius on one core.  The rest were just under that so it does not appear to be a CPU overheating issue.  CPU core voltage is 0.962 in the BIOS and core voltage is set to auto if I read it correctly.  RAM is at 1.360. It does seem more stable with XMP disabled at least so far this evening, but I’d like to have it at the higher clock if possible for performance.  I did get an error once where the system reset BIOS settings as well with XMP enabled after one crash.

I’m including the main components below:

i9 9900k with no manual overclock

MSI MEG Z390 ACE mobo

MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio GPU

Sabrent Rocket NVME 4 500 GB and 1 TB for storage

G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 with XMP enabled in BIOS

Cooler Master H500M case which is synched with Mystic Light

Do you ladies and gentlemen have any suggestions for me on my next troubleshooting step(s) or configuration?  I ran the RAM diagnostics built into windows which found no errors and installed the drivers from the included CD with the motherboard.  I’m assuming (hoping) that the solution is a simple one and that nothing major is wrong.  Anything you all could provide to help me will be greatly appreciated.  Apologies for the long winded post, LOL!

If it's stable without xmp it does seem to be a memory issue. In that case you could try to overclock your memory manually instead of using xmp.

Move the Memory to slots A2 and B2 or the 2nd and 4th from the cpu.

What are the cpu temps while your using the PC?

Hi, thanks for the response.  They are installed in those slots already.  During normal use the cores are in the low 30s.  Under stress 61 or under.

Possibility the CPU voltage is low?  I’m not sure what settings for a manual overclock of the RAM.  I’m pretty ignorant on this topic.  Ignorance can be fixed at least, lol.  Thanks for your reply!

in regards to whea errors, this is sometimes the cpu is too low voltage.

Perhaps try disable power savings to see how it acts with a higher constant voltage.

I will give that a go after work.  Will look through the BIOS to find that option.  I’ll report back my findings when I can after that.

OK, you are really really new. So you want to do some reading before you go messing around.

For overclocking and such, read some tutorials. Get to know your bios and the menus.

Play around with settings, when in doubt put the setting back to auto.

To save settings, you hit F10 in bios to save the configuration you had input. The board will post with the new settings.

So here's from MSI some reading material about overclocking, it will be somewhat informative, but it's a start.

I would like to add that this evening, I was trying to install a game, Borderlands 3, and it crashed without XMP enabled.  But it did seem to take longer before it happened.

ok..... you changed what exactly? Not sure what's going on, difficult to help.

No other changes other than disabling XMP in the BIOS again.  I am reading through the guide you linked now on another computer while doing so and hope to find a good starting point.  I mostly wanted to correct that the issue wasn't occurring with XMP disabled.  Apologies for causing any confusion.

Well, the IMC may be just a little picky with the amount of memory, or perhaps the timing sets....

I need a part number for. G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 32GB 2x 16gb. A picture of the sticker if that's easiest.

Then I need to see a cpu-z screen shot of the memory tab and spd tab, you can open cpu-z multiple times for the screen shot.

Alrighty, I will get that info as soon as I can.  Thank you very much for your assistance thus far!  I can get the model of the RAM now though.

The RAM is F4-3200C14D-32GTZR.  It may be tomorrow before I can get back to take the screenshots as I have to work late.

No problem. Just remember the feed back with details!

It is more stable now after setting an adaptive plus offset of +0.025v with XMP on, but voltage is still probably lower than it needs to be.  I read online somewhere to give that a try.  I tried messing around as much as I felt comfortable on my own so I wasn’t going to push it too much at that moment.  I was then able to download large files and installed a few games with no crashes so far the past couple of days. I will get the screenshots using SnagIt late this evening and post a link. I’m not sure I’m getting the lower CAS timings across the board though.  Anyway, we’ll go from there once I get the screenshots as promised for your review.  I’m sure we’ll probably manually set the voltage afterwards, but let’s see what we find.  I was trying to do a little bit more on my own too, so apologies for the delay.

The BIOS shows 3200 on the RAM and that XMP is on but CPU-Z shows something slightly different unless I'm just being dumb, LOL.  Let me know if the image size isn't ok, and I will upload to a sharing site.  Just to be sure I included the RAM, it is model # F4-3200C14D-32GTZR.

Nope, everything is correct.

The settings I would change are:

Power Down mode - disabled

Set DRam voltage manually to 1.36v

Cpu SA voltage to 1.2

Cpu IO 1.250

Cpu V-vore back to stock auto.

you are working on the memory not the cpu. (unless you've o.c.'ed a bit)
