Here is the scenario:

My friend who's in college(architect)  wants to build a pc for gaming/video editing/rendering models.

$1000 budget for just the tower

I was thinking,

r7 1700 or r5 2600

Gigabyte b450 aorus pro wifi

gtx 1660super

G.skill trident Z RGB 2×8gb ram at 3200mhz

intel 660p 500gb

4tb hdd

620w psu

Comments on parts:

Cpu: leaning more on the r7, more cores is better for rendering right?

Mobo: he wants a mobo with wifi. He said the router is far from his room.

Gpu: might be better options

Storage: he wants the 4tb. I can't stop him

Case: nice airflow and features would be appreciated

Cooling: he wants an aio, but i suggested to him a big ass heat sink for lower maintenance

Any suggestions on case and cooling?

Any thing you can change for the build that will help performance will be great.

Thanks!

Note: he wants rgb

for gaming r5 3600 is a big improvement even for video editing the new zen 2 cores are better than the r7 1700 first gen ryzen cpu.

for a cheaper buy you can go for 2700 or 2600. otherwise this build seems nice! (gpu and ram is good for this budget!)

before buying 3600 check if the mobo supports ryzen 3rd gen cpu (some b450 don't support it) if no u would have to do a bios update if available.

Seems logical. Might go for 3600 if the budget allows it . If not, might just go for the 2600

If the priority is Editing/Rendering 1st and gaming 2nd this is great.  If it's gaming over those things than I could swap the CPU + Mobo for the Ryzen 3600.

-I normally pick the RX 5700 (w/ a decent oem cooler) at this budget, but if the rendering or video editing likes CUDA than I popped a decent NVIDIA GPU in there.  Could sub-in the RX if we really don't need CUDA, or NVENC encoding, or RTX for now.

Compared to the price of the 3600 the 2700 makes more sense and yes the main purpose of the build is rendering/editing, gaming is just an extra

Trying to stay away from rtx as for now due to the tech still being "new" cause the next gen might be more worth the money compared to now. I mean $1200 for a gpu is just too much. We need more competition to see the prices drop

The lower price of the 1660super with gddr6 might be a better buy than the 1660ti with gddr5. You know what screw nvidia for making this much more confusing than they have too

Yeah, I would also lean on the 1660 Super if you want CUDA but don't want RTX.  I'd look at a card like this:  https://pcpartpicker.com/product/zwYQzy/asus-geforce-gtx-1660-super-6-gb-dual-evo-oc-video-card-dual-gtx1660s-o6g-evo   good cooler, good boosts, price is right.

For AMD-side (comparison) you'll get far more FPS with this, but no CUDA:  https://pcpartpicker.com/product/K8MTwP/msi-radeon-rx-5700-8-gb-mech-oc-video-card-radeon-rx-5700-mech-oc
