So I recently purchased the ViewSonic XG2402 because it was about time for an upgrade. However, I overlooked the fact that the monitor has no DVI port, and considering that DVI is the only connection on my 7 year old computer that can run 144hz, I kind of screwed up. For the time being I'm fine with using it on 60hz with a scuffed cable setup (Mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter and an old HDMI cable) but I've also been planning on upgrading my computer and I want to make sure that when I upgrade I have the proper ports to run 144hz. I'm currently running on the HP Pavilion HPE h8-1040 and my plan is to upgrade the CPU, Motherboard, RAM and possibly the PSU depending on whether or not it will explode with new parts. I want to know if I absolutely need to upgrade my GPU as well or if I could just use a connection from the Motherboard to get 144hz.

The parts I've gotten/am in the process of getting are:

  • Ryzen 7 2700x
  • MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series (2x 8GB) DDR4 3600

Also in my desperate attempt to get 144hz to function on my old PC I bought these two connectors:

(This did not work :()

Am I positively required to upgrade my 550Ti (I only play CS:GO so upgrading the GPU isn't a massive priority) in order to get a DisplayPort connection to run 144hz or can I use the USB-C port on the B450 Tomahawk Max with the USB-C to DisplayPort Cable and use the 144hz my monitor is capable of?

-Also a little side note, if someone could tell me whether or not I need to upgrade my PSU that would also be very nice ?

You should be able to run 144 Hz over HDMI, just set a custom resolution if the option isn't there by default.

It's not actually an HDMI, it's listed as an HDMI for some reason on the specs page, but it's actually a Mini-HDMI. :(

The connector type doesn't matter, HDMI is HDMI.

Try setting a custom resolution using the instructions in section 6.3 here:

Well could you point me in the direction of a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable capable of 144hz? Or a Mini-HDMI to HDMI female adapter that could do the same? That would be a massive help.

Anything should do fine, try it with the adapter and cable you already have.
