Maxing out old PCs

I have a bunch of older systems, all LGA 775 machines.  They are all maxed out to 8GB of ram, all have Qx6850 CPUs, all have NVME drives on PCI-E adapter cards.  I've really cheaped out on these things by getting parts on eBay when I see some sweet deals.

The last piece I need is some GPUs.  They all have PCI-E x16 slots, 1.0 spec.  What would be the best GPU to put in them for gaming?  Right now, I have some GeForce 8400 GS cards that are in them, but finding the best 10 year old GPUs has been difficult.  Is there any benefit to running a higher end card from 3 or 4 years ago?
