In a few weeks my roommate and I are going to start updating his rig for 2020.

He initially planned on upgrading the CPU and GPU when stock replenished, but he's had many things come up and it's been pushed back until now.

He games, he streams from time to time, he multitasks like a mad man; almost always has a video on the go as he games on the two other monitors (idle game and a regular game).

He also hoards movies and such.

Current build:

Total: $1510.29

  • The 9700k will be sourced used, so no price (it'll likely be free). Does the 9900k work on this platform?
  • The 500GB SSD is a cache for the 6TB drive. He likes to have all of his games installed at once, and the cache will drop load times.
  • His current SSD is full, thus the addition of the 2TB m.2.
  • He'll be running a 144hz 1440p monitor for gaming, and 2 side monitors.
  • 4TB HDD and RX 590 will be sold.
  • He won't be upgrading for 5 - 6 years (aside from perhaps a graphics card).

Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything here.
If the 9900k will work on the Z370 board, he'll probably switch to that.

the 9900k, and it's much better on th account that it has multi threading, will work with a bios update on the motherboard.

stay away from the intel ssd, look at tlc ssd instead like the samsung evo or wd blue, not the samsung qvo. everyone I know in real life who bought that ssd has regretted it.

the gpu is a weird one cause the 2070 super is just 10% weaker for $200 less, but the 2080S is the only option at the price point at this time. I'd drop the 6tb hdd and grab the 2080 ti if he can bump the budget a bit higher.

Ah good to know it'll work, I couldn't recall if it needed motherboards with better VRMs or not.

I don't think it'll be that bad, it's just going to be used to store games. Might up it to an HP EX950.

Depends on the title, as some titles are significantly faster than the 2070 Super. He needs the storage, so dropping it isn't an option, and frankly I wouldn't buy a 2080 Ti this close to the launch of the new generation. He might even push back the video card a few months over the rest of the build.

That's the issue,it's a failure at storage. At 50% capacity it slows down to slower than a hard drive . If he needs the cheap storage buy a hard drive instead, as qlc is just the worst investment you can do for your pc today.
