And hasn't been for about a week, coincidentally around the same time as I recently installed the latest Windows update (although I didn't use my mic at all in that week, so I'm not sure if that was the culprit). I've had this headset (Sennheiser Game One) for nearly three years with no issues.

The Sennheiser's mic works on my laptop and I even bought a new standalone microphone today and neither work on my desktop PC. I've allowed my apps permission to access the microphone in the privacy settings, and my system detects that I have a microphone (and troubleshooting indicates no problem with it) but yet when I attempt to use it, all I hear is static. I've tested this on multiple applications and in the Windows control panel. I don't have a dedicated soundcard, so the sound is (I'm assuming) integrated into my motherboard (MSI Z170-A PRO).

Also might be worth noting that my sound works perfectly - I hear everything. I feel like I've completely run out of things to try at this point. Does this sound like a driver issue, motherboard issue, or software issue? I'm a newbie when it comes to tech stuff and I figured anybody who might know anything would likely be here. Thanks.

Clean install windows.

I had an audio interface stop working about a year ago and no amount of driver reinstalls, rollbacks, etc. would make it work on my PC even though it worked fine on my laptop.

The clean install fixed it.

Ah, seriously? :( This was the one answer I was hoping wouldn't come up. Thank you for your reply. I'll wait and see if anyone else has any more suggestions on anything that might be worth trying first, and if not then I'll take your advice. Thanks.
