Hi all,

I build my new rig 6 months ago and I have been plagued with random hard hangs (no BSOD appart from maybe 4 times total) that require me to turn the PSU off for 10 seconds and then back on to get the computer to even boot. It has happened in and out of games, when the PC is literally idle with chrome open. I have run Memtest with no fails and today I tried turning off my XMP1 profile to run my RAM at default and it caused a hard lock withing 10 seconds. Anyone have any insight as to why disabling and XMP1 profile might cause crashing?

Specs as follows:

  • 9900k stock
  • Kraken x62 AIO
  • Asus ROG Z390-I
  • 16gb G.Skill Trident 3200 DDR4 (Running with XMP1 enabled causes random crashes under load and when idle, disabling XMP1 causes crashing withing 10 seconds of booting into Windows 10)
  • 1TB Samsun 970 Nvme SSD
  • 2080ti with g12 aio bracket/ Corsair H55
  • Corsair SF750 PSU
  • NZXT H200 case
  • Windows 10

Any help is hugely appreciated!

Data is sparse.  Given what is here, The nzxt 200 is a small case with somewhat restricted airflow.  It seems to be built for AIO watercooling.  I comes stock with only one rear fan, if that.  My first suspicion is heat issues. It could be a bunch of things though. What are you cooling things with?  Have you looked at what temps you are getting?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

As I put in the specs I am running a Kraken x62 AIO on the CPU and an NZXT G12 bracket with an AIO for the 2080ti. The CPU peaks at 67 degrees under Prime and the GPU never goes above 63 degrees. The hangs also can happen when the system is idle with only chrome running, if it were a heat issue then I would see more crashes when playing games or running benchmarks which isnt the case.

You've waited way too long ...

Try to run with just one RAM stick (both of them separately) in different slots to see if it works better (with and without XMP profile).

Tag or quote me so i see your reply

My guess would be bad ram or bad mobo.

Memtest doesn't always tell the full story.

I had bad memory early this year but my ram still passed my memtest with flying colors.

Fortunately I had 2x 4gb sticks of 2400mhz that i could swap with for further testing.

Try running each RAM stick in both of your ram slots.

CPU: i9 9900K   Cooler: NH-D15   RAM: Kingston Fury 4 x 8GB 3600MHz CL17   Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix Z390-F   GPU: ASUS 3080 TUF   Case: Be Quiet! 500DX   PSU: Corsair HX850i   Storage: 250GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe (OS), 500GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe (Games), 2TB Crucial BX500 SSD (Storage)   Monitor: Samsung Odyssey Neo G9.

i know that issue when the CPU cache is clocked too high.

did you checked that asus did not something dumb in their bios?

on my extreme4 my cache was at 4.7 Ghz out of the box.

and for 4.7 i need at least 1.328v under load to maintain stability.
but when the CPU cache is too fast the PC will just freeze hard even in idle and totally random.

So not heat issues.  Missed the presence of the water cooler.  Should have quoted.
