Can't you just do it from control panel?

What did the guides say to do?

 

 

There should be a "users and accounts" or something tab in control panel. There you should find your account, and you should be able to change the name. But I don't use Windows, so don't quote me on that.

They did say that but that didn't come up when I did those things.

You cannot change your user account name. Not really. Your directory name remains the same, registry entries remains the same, the only difference is that your new username is displayed and used by some games or programs. Check your users folder and tell me - is your user name folder inside with new name?
