I am new to pc gaming, recently purchased a used system

i5-6500

MSI B150 Mortar motherboard

16GB ram G.Skill RipJaw

2 500GB SSD SanDisk

Nvidia GTX1070 Founders edition

I am using this system for VR and it seems to do OK. However I would like to run DCS World flight simulator in VR and am curious if it is worth it to max out the motherboard and upgrade to a i7-770K or save for a new cpu mobo combo?

I wouldn't invest in a old platform. Sure the 7700K still competes, you'll be spending on a motherboard that won't get you too far before you start seeing CPU bottlenecks. I'd say stick with the i5 as long as possible, and get yourself a 3600/X on sale. AM4 socket (used for ryzen series) will include the next generation, promised by AMD to have better single thread performance that would close the gap for gaming between Intel/AMD. I personally have a i7 6700 (non-K) that is sitting in my basement. Might get a 1650S and give it to someone.

Hard to justify a 6700/7700 since the used prices are so high, Ryzen has such good value for upgrades.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

Being old school I am biased to intel processors and cannot be swayed even though AMD is a better deal.  What would be the upgrade path for VR flight simulation?

Not just a better deal, AMD is now a better CPU. Not sure what a used 7700 runs for, but it'll be cheaper than Ryzen+Mobo+RAM.
