First build need Constructive Criticism

SheevaBlaster

Hello all,

Here's a copy of my build:

I already have the CPU and Thermaltake Case purchased (Got the CPU for $290, the case was $90). Can I have opinions on the rest of my build though?

I plan on using this rig for 60% gaming, 40% as a workstation so I'd like some versatility.

Any one know how solid the MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC mobo is? Is it worth it? I think I really like how streamlined the MSI Bios is compared to everyone else. Has wireless internet so I guess that's a plus even though I plan on typically having my computer with an ethernet capable. Will I be able to get the most out of the DDR4-3600 RAM I have in there? Is DDR4-3600 even worth it?

I would like to be able to play games like Rust, Squad, Battlefield, COD, Escape From Tarkov, and other FPS/Mil sim games at high settings/FPS with also a nice G sync monitor that has a high refresh rate/response time as well.

Let me know what your thoughts are! Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Just a couple things off the top of my head:

  • Don't get that monitor if you're doing any kind of color sensitive work, it's pretty trash tier. I'd look for something else.
  • I think the EX950 is usually only a few dollars more?
  • I wouldn't get an MSI motherboard. I'd go with Gigabyte, or perhaps AsRock.

Here's a link to the case's website...

If you scroll down a little bit you can see a picture of all the possible fan configurations. If any one could provide me any type of insight regarding the fans I have in my build so far and how I should configure them in the case that would be greatly appreciated!

Hmmmm, I don't think I'm doing any photo/video editing really, but I'm not sure. I just like that monitor because of it's relatively high refresh rate and 1 ms, and it's G-Sync approved, and I'm able to play in 1440p if I wanted to. I'm kind of on a budget with a monitor, as I've already exceeded my budget for this build by a hundred dollars it seems like.

I'll definitely look into the EX 950. How much better is it?

And wow, another person that doesn't recommend an MSI motherboard. Can I ask what is your reasoning? People keep telling me to go for the Gigabyte z390 but I'm not sure, I've heard their bios is typically terrible especially for newbies like myself. Is MSI just overpriced? I mean if it's a quality build that will last me a while then I don't really mind. I'm trying to future proof this build as much as possible.

Thank you for your input!

msi's boards aren't bad per say, it's just that gigabyte has gone so nuts on vrm they win most of the time for me. i added a cheaper, but still totally keepable cooler to it. the ram is sold as 3000 cl15, but as this is micron e, it has shown to be keepable of 3600-3800 mhz. i added a cheaper 2070s to it. Focus has shown some issues at 120% overload with ripple, and the Ion+ is similarly priced. you could save some money here by grabbing an 80+ gold like this one though: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/bqVD4D/corsair-rmx-2018-550w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020177-nathe f14's are mostly just because they're cheaper, but still fine here. i'd personnaly go with 3 intake and 1-2 enhaust fans. i don't know much about monitors, so i'll leave that to others

Don't go off of claimed response times from monitor companies, they're very, very rarely accurate. $330 is a lot for a monitor and there are loads of better options out there.

It's only a generation newer so it's not amazing, but if it's only a few dollars, I'd still spend the extra.

I had a couple of MSI motherboards when I tried Ryzen, all failed. I have an MSI motherboard now, and it's failing. I'll never buy another MSI motherboard again, nor will I recommend one.
