Hello

My PC just powered off (hard drop) while playing Battlefield V on the new island map. It was during a point where a lot of explosions were happening and vehicles were driving around. At this time, the CPU was running above 95% usage and hit 100% quite often. The PC hard powered off and then turned itself back on. I had already disabled ASUS Anti-Surge protection in the UEFI settings.

I then opened Prime95 and FurMark and ran them both at the same time. My PC did the same thing and hard powered off after only 30 seconds. I repeated this another 3 times the exact same way all within 10 to 30 seconds of running the 2 stress tests together. I then ran just Prime95 (CPU only) and the PC did not power off at all. I also ran just FurMark (GPU only) and the PC also did not power off at all. I then opened Prime95 and let it run for a few mins, then as soon as I clicked to start the FurMark stress test, the system hard powers off literally as the FurMark window opens - every time.

The only thing I can think of is that it is the power supply not being able to handle both CPU and GPU at the same time. I made sure to use separate dedicated PCIe power cables for my GPU instead of sharing one power cable but that did not help. This don't believe that this is a heat issue as my temperatures for CPU, GPU, Motherboard VRMs and GPU VRMs are well under control.

Specs:

Intel Core i7 6700K

AMD Radeon R9 390X

16GB (4x4GB) 3200MHz DDR4

ASUS Z170-DELUXE Motherboard

Corsair AX860 (non-i) Power Supply

I am thinking of getting a new power supply but I am cautious and thought I would ask here first. Any help is appreciated.

PC:

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X | AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE | 32 GB RAM | Arch Linux

Laptop:

Server:

Intel Core i7 6700K | 16 GB RAM | 2 TB HDD | Debian Linux

Yep, that sounds like a busted PSU. But an AX should not do that. How old is it? You might have warranty.

I got it in December 2015 when I built my rig. I must check if I can warranty it. I agree that an AX 850 should not do this as it is supposed to be a high-quality unit. I suspect that power surges may have damaged it since I live in South Africa where load-shedding is a thing and we have an extremely unstable power grid.

I killed 2 power supplies to blackouts in just a year, its most definitely a possibility.
