I’m looking for a good bang for the buck cpu for an 1155 socket. Right now I have a i3 2120 and I want something a little more gaming capable. I’m thinking about the I5 3470 for 20-25 dollars. I’m just wondering if there’s something more powerful for around the same price

You could have a look at 2600(K) or 3770(K) CPU's too, although those really only worth it if you are gonna need the extra 4 threads.

Since those are the best options for the platform, they generally come for quite a premium though.

Well to understand if CPU is really the trouble spot, what GPU, RAM, etc is in your current computer?

Well I have a pretty cheap rig lol I bought my pc off craigslist for 80$ And it has a gtx 750 1gb , dual core i3 2120 with 8gbs of ram (probably ddr3)

Both of the things holding you back, cpu is quite weak but same as gpu. Do u know what motherboard you have in there??? If you can’t oc with it I would recommend i7 3770 without K, but don’t expect anything amazing with this gpu, you’ll have to upgrade as well

I know it’s not a “powerhouse” I only play lighter titles on it such as insurgency, Fortnite, splitgate, etc I just feel only having 2 cores Is really limiting me

CPU bottlenecks are the least of your worries.  CPUs don't make frames in video games, GPUs do and yours isn't exactly the kind that gets throttled by the CPU with something that old on both sides.  Don't try to force-spend money on a rig that is already that old, unless you do get a really sweet deal on a 4-core, in which case sure, may help a little.

But in the grand scheme I would either save up for a GPU upgrade first, or better yet, wait and do a new rig and re-flip that computer on craigslist if it's not good enough anymore.  It's a very poor investment to swap the CPU on an already outdated platform from 2011 and it will not magically make the GTX 750 1GB a better card.

A newer GPU would possibly mean new PSU, and then you'd have a CPU bottleneck, so if you follow that logic, a new rig is likely where you want to be, not nickle and diming diminishing returns one at a time.

So start with cpu, if you can afford it get i7 3770, if not get i5, they drop in price this days. After that you can save some money and than invest into gpu

Assuming that it isn't a prebuilt case with a low-wattage power supply.  Hopefully he has a normal ATX power supply or that move will snowball fast when the case can't fit a bigger GPU and the PSU can't power it.

Yes you are 100% right, all depends what psu and case he have atm. If that’s one of this prebuilt system he will end up swapping almost everything on the end.
