Hey guys,

I usually upgrade my PC once a year (at least one component) and this year, for now, I only upgraded my monitor. You can see my PC parts in my profile section but the 2 important parts are the GTX 1070 and the i7 4790K.

I mainly use this PC for multimedia purposes and gaming, 1080p. Now, my main question is, what should be my next update to see some improvements in performance. Battlefield V set itself to all ultra and both my GPU and CPU were over 90% usage and running around the 100-120 FPS mark with a few drops to 70 here and there.

On the GPU side I was thinking about buying a used GTX 1080Ti as it seems like a pretty good upgrade while still being a relevant card for at least 1-2 years. The CPU side however really is a tough one. AMD seems like a better way to go (overall) while Intel still is better at gaming. However, as now I am forced to change everything (CPU+Mobo+Ram) I want something that lasts at least 2-3 years, and the 9th gen Intel platform clearly is a dead end. What do you guys recommend, upgrade the GPU and wait for 10th gen Intel (that will probably still be a dead end as they are not going 7nm now, and I will have to change the Mobo again to upgrade to a newer CPU) or upgrade to an AMD platform first and stick to this GPU for a while. In my AMD budget I would go for a Ryzen 7 3700X/3800X depending on the price difference at the moment.

Thanks a lot!

Ryzen 7 3700x is your best bet.

That motherboard has already bios for third gen ryzen, no need to bios update. Trident z neo ram is made for ryzen and its pretty cool. Arctic freezer 34 esports duo is bang for the buck cooler. Ryzen 3700x runs cooler than 3800x 3800x draws more power, overclockc better, gets hotter and has 5% better performance, but if you have like 50bucks more to spend, i would actually buy some x570 board.

Now the ryzen 7 3800x is going for sale at amazon. You will need a beefy cooler tho.

Hmm looks pretty decent to me tho. I guess you're playing on a 144Hz monitor or even more otherwise it wouldn't be worth upgrading cpu nor gpu from my point of view.

AMD does have its comeback in overall performance, but buying new mobo and cpu I don't think it would be worth it. Imo your CPU is still good as your graphics card. But if you really wanted to have more fps then it depends. If you can get a 1080Ti that would be good since it's still very good in its performance. If you can't get one, but you have a good amount of money to spend you should go atleast with a rtx 2070 or 2080 (if you can afford it). Otherwise the 5700xt is a really good card for price per performance. It is cheaper than a 2070(S), but is in many games even with a 2070S.

But if your main point is more a allround-system then you can choose the parts SavageNeo stated.

I am no expert in any means so wait for more comments.

Your motherboard does NOT support 9th or 8th gen intel.

Yeah, I just bought a 144Hz monitor (1080p). The main question is what would give me more performance at the lowest cost.. upgrading the 1070 to a 1080Ti (I do not want to go the AMD route on the GPU side) or changing the whole CPU+Mobo+memory combo. If I go the 2nd route I want an X570 motherboard (probably the X570-E from Asus). My CPU cooler is a SilentiumPC Fera 3 RGB. I am just watching Buildzoid's list of noteworthy 2x8GB as I really want to buy something that I do not have to change again because it's not a good performer (I want the ram to have RGB too).
